Cool De Atramentis Document Dark Red

De Atramentis – Document Dark red

Delightful pigment ink, well behaved by De Atramentis. A pleasure to write or sketch with, compared to the disastrous Cyan and Turquoise inks, I reviewed recently. I honestly don’t see much difference between this or De Atramentis Artist Dark Red. They’re quite similar. Document is supposedly slightly more “archival”.
All Document and Artist inks can be mixed.
    Lets start with the chroma:

    Comparaison:

Comparison with De Atramentis Artist Dark Red:

I didn't test it with Stub, flex or fude nibs, but you can get a general idea from the De Aramentis Artist ink review.

And finally a sketch. My model, who is quite fidgety, was for once rolled in her basket.
Paper is Fabriano Sketch book, a very absorbent paper.

    · Pens used: Pilot Elite (Ef) Lamy Safari (Ef/F/M/B)
    · What I liked: Very well-behaved ink, unlike its blue siblings. If you’re looking for a nice dark red, this is a good one. Get a sample.
    · What I did not like: Nothing.
    · What some might not like: It’s a pigment ink.
    · Shading: Yes with some nib.
    · Ghosting: None. Possible on cheap papers.
    · Bleed through: None. Possible on cheap, absorbent papers.
    · Flow Rate: Excellent
    · Lubrication: Excellent
    · Nib Dry-out: None.
    · Start-up: None
    · Saturation: Dark
    · Shading Potential: None.
    · Sheen: None.
    · Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: None
    · Nib Creep / “Crud”: Nope.
    · Staining (pen): No.
    · Clogging: No.
    · Cleaning: Easy. Like most pigment inks, if you have a well-sealed pen or using your pen regularly it should be fine. If you forget the ink in a pen, there’s no need to panic. An overnight soaking in water, and 15 minutes of soaking in cleaning solution will clean thefeed.
    · Water resistance: Excellent
    · Availability: 45 ml bottles.

Please don't hesitate to share your experience, writing samples or any other comments. The more the merrier

Still great, Yazeh. But the kitty picture isn't showing up for me. Meanwhile, looking at the chroma again, I'm a little surprised by how much it moves, so I guess this one needs some time to dry, and then it's solid (per the water test).

Thanks for letting me know. I didn't double check the link. It's working now. I've noticed this with most permanent inks. The way, I do chroma is to put a drop of ink on a paper towel and dunk it right in a glass of water. So the ink doesn't have the time to dry. I did the same thing with Mata Hari's cordial. I forgot the paper towel for more than an hour, the ink travelled around the globe
As for the the water-test, I often wait 24 hours or more, before running the test part under water. It's not the most scientific method, but it's good enough for me. With De Atramentis Document inks, normally nothing comes off. With some Noodler's "bulletproof", forgery-proof inks, you see the "tampering". The ink changes for example, if you add bleach to the fluorescent inks, under UV light, which makes you discern tampering. Or with Akhmatova the ink changes colours under water. You'll only notice it when you see the other side of the paper. Hope I'm clear enough

Thank you, Yazeh, for a thorough review. I apologize that I don't comment enough on ink reviews, but while I read them I often don't have much to add or comment on. I *will* say that the one thing about this ink is that I have a hard time thinking of it as dark. At best it seems a medium red to me, and I have a number of reds that are much darker, though they aren't IG. I had the same reaction when I purchased a bottle of DeAt Document Dark Green... not dark enough!

You're most welcome Jon. There's no need to apologize, the fact that you read them is more than enough This one isn't an IG ink, it's a pigment ink. You have a point, about it not being dark enough. But compared to the Document Red, is darkish. They have added also a Red Grey, and Black Red, in case you're interested

How dark is it? My darkest is Diamine Oxblood, Red Dragon, and my favorite of the very dark ones is Burgundy Rose. I am getting a slightly lighter shade, with just a bit more red showing on paper. Some turn up nearly black on paper, depending on the light. De Atramentis Document Dark Red looks very good on my screen!

I think I've got a swatch of burgundy rose, somewhere, I'll post a side by side comparison later. But I believe their quite different

Burgundy rose has a bit of blue in it, I think. I don`t mind it being slightly towards brick red. I`m adding to my selection of reds, just to have something to choose from ;- )

The darkest rose in my garden is Souvenir du Dr. Jamain, fragrant and unusually dark. Nothing on paper comes close to these petal shades.

I couldn't find the Document Dark Red swatch.
De Atramentis Document and Artist DarK Reds are almost identical. Here is a comparison with Burgundy Rose.

The Darkest Rose I had was Oklahoma. Now it's something between Reines des violettes or Sweet Chariot

So that's what's it called. I call it Basket case moment when she starts howling at invisible ghost or shadows, on account that her majesty's favorite napping place is a big basket filled with old cloths and a door draft dodger

That's what I've always heard it called, when they go zooming about like they're chasing invisible bugs or something. Basket case sounds good.
