Mystery Inks #51, 52, and 53

I used to have this as something for children to do in school but it's no longer at the link I found. However there are several chromatography links for kids out there.

I take a white kitchen paper towel and cut it into approximately one inch strips. Then on the front side of the strip about one and a half inches up from the bottom I add a little ink across the towel strip using either a cotton bud or the pen. Then I hang the strip vertically on a shelf or something using a piece of tape so that the bottom end of the towel with the ink on is only just dipping into the water surface of a glass of water by about a quarter of an inch or less, definitely not touching the ink, and as soon as the ink has stopped spreading up the towel I lift it out of the water then allow it to rest on the outside edge of the glass so that it doesn't get too wet.

I never allow the strip to remain in the water for more than approximately 1 or 2 minutes or the chroma becomes too watered down and isn't as clear.

@chrissy, clever way of doing it. I Like the idea of tiny strips. I wouldn't have had the yellow in the chroma, had I not let it stay longer, otherwise it was dark blob of brown ink. Bit maybe I had more than a drop of ink....

My usual method is to put a drop of ink on the paper towel, then a drop of water, then hang the paper towel until it dries.

That won't work because the towel will dry before the water has worked through the ink. All you will manage to do is to water down the drop of ink.

Yep, you need the water to wick up and separate the ink. Nick Stewart uses the same system to do his art. He brushes water on the paper (3 strokes)and adds a drop of ink or sketches with a pen, and the ink dilutes and the complex ones separate and create magical landscapes....

Look how interesting is the chroma of# 52.

I was expecting a saturated blue, but I was surprised by the colour. It reminds me a bit of the other Private Reserve inks, Jim sent us. It doesn't like copy paper

and the red seems to have some brown in it. But I haven't inked it yet. So, we'll see...

All 3 of my chromas look like inks I will like but I knew instantly I would really like #51 and probably #53. This is just my first little bit of writing with #51, I need to try to get my pictures under direct sunlight, even though I have pretty bright LED bulbs right above me when I'm taking the picture the ink and chroma look darker than what my eyes are seeing

Here's my first try with MI #51.



This ink behaves well enough in my HeroFari, and has a dusty look that appeals to me.

Hmmm.... others are seeing things in this ink that have so far eluded me. Your chromas are spectacular and complex. Mine came out flat. Maybe it's my brand of paper towel.

Coffee filters work really good too, I cut a strip and then dip a q-tip in the ink and draw a line near the bottom of the strip. Then dip the strip so the line is just above the water and let it soak for 45 seconds to a minute watching it draw the colors out as it goes.

I might have to try the paper towel method just for fun.

I didn't know too if I should post all 3 chromas so so far I just have the one with a short writing, more to come soon

It might be easier to take pictures outside in the sunlight but also whatever you use to take your pictures might have a way of pre or post editing. If you take your images with a phone there may be some editing available on there that you could adjust the light and or white balance.

#51 on Tomoe River Paper...

Sorry for the smudging... I thought the ink was dry... but I sort of like it

Instead of a Japanese Ef, I wrote with a reverse Lamy Ef.... I hope it's acceptable

and Jinhao 450 with a fude nib...

I was very surprised with this ink. The colour didn't match the chroma: It reminds me of a dark Parker blue

A quick review right after inking the pen up can't wait to test this on other papers to see if I can get some shading. One thing I will say is definitely not what I expected the ink to look like when I saw the chroma.

I would say, it has a long dry compared to the others.

Mystery #53

Lamy Reverse Ef/Ef/F/M/B, Kanwrite Ultraflex, Jinhao 450

This is a chameleon of an ink. It changes colour and personality with your nib. I'm not sure if I had enough ink in the Jinhao, that it created such a light colour.
I have no idea what this ink is.
What I love about this ink is that it dries under 20s with a B nib. That's a feat by itself.

Shading is more visible on scan than to the naked eye.

I'll post, later on, the water test results.
