    Default Another Newbie question…

How do I size a replacement Sac. I have just acquired an old Underwood lever fill pen that the sac basically just fell out in pieces when I removed the barrel. Everything else looks ok but I was wondering how do I know what type/size sac I need to get to replace the old one? Thanks.

If the diameter of the nipple is .324 inch, which I think is correct for Underwood, then the sac size is 20.

Before there was so much help on the Internet the rule of thumb was to try a number of sized sacs, when you find one that fits then the correct size sac is a size smaller, this means that you need to have a good stock of different sized sacs of course.

Thank you for the info Rob. That makes sense to me about keeping some things on hand. I restore and refurbish vintage Tobacco pipes and have done for several years now, and I try to always have a surplus of certain things on hand.

If I may ask you, where do most folks get there supplies and what in your opinion would be a good bunch to start with? Thanks again.

You'll likely get a lot of good info here, even on this small-ish forum. Pro-tip, though: even if it's a n00b query, a little suggestion in the subject/title will catch people's eyes when they scan new threads. A generic "hey, I got a question" might cause some people to just scroll by. Just my $0.02.

Richard Binder's website gives sac sizes for a lot of pens.
