    Default Collections

There was a time when I thought I had too many pens, around 300 Parkers, 1925-1960 with Vacs being front and centre. I was handed some grief for having too many and reduced the size of the collection and, unfortunately, also the quality, 'you are old now and I wouldn't know what to do with them', fair enough I suppose.

This collecting bug was brought into perspective yesterday when I met a man who had over 600 car waxes, all different and he is still buying, some are over $5000 each.

He waxes his car once a month and typically a container of wax will last him more than two years. I pointed out that he has enough car wax for a thousand years and was rebuked by the idea that he would use his collection, 'oh no, I have a bottle of Turtle Wax for when I wax my car'.

I left him with the thought in my head, never judge another person's hobby or how they spend their money.

Was sitting with a client talking to pass time during a too-long mediation. Got talking collecting, as he noticed my FP.
"And what do you collect?" I asked.
    "Prophylactic tins," he replied.
Surprised silence: Didn't know there were such things.

I haven't heard of such a thing either, cookie tins, tea caddies, cake tins, all those. I had to google prophylactic tins, expecting them to be maybe $30, not a chance, you will not have much change out of $1000.

Father was a cigar smoker and had a collection cigar molds/moulds, just because he thought they were good looking objects.

All gone now but they would have made attractive storage for smaller vintage pens.

I know just what you mean Sailor, the only exception is the food I buy for when the neighbours cat comes round, he turns his nose up at any cat food that isn't the absolute best.

We don't mind spending too much on the special pen for our collections, mine as the Parker Vacumatic with the VACUMATIC
Cap band and then decided it was too special to use, just a crackpot.

I asked the person who delivers my mail if there was less mail to deliver, her response, slightly sexist, was:

'I will always be busy as long as there are silly men buying shiny objects for their collections from all over the world'.
