    Default lovely red ripple....

Wasn't expecting to see marbled bakelite in this spot- these are vacuum tube receptacles on my 1946 Hammond CV. I'll be replacing all the capacitors in it tomorrow-ish.

    That is very cool.

Nothing like the smell of burned Bakelite, or warming your hands over the big tubes. Have fun changing the caps. Just make sure that you fully discharge each one! I have some good mic pres that I need to shotgun with new caps.

Really attractive red ripple bakelite despite the fact that I don't know what a 1946 Hammond CV actually is. LOL

Classy stuff, built to last. I still have my 1930s Bakelite telephone.

Absolutely fascinating! Especially as in my other post I had decided to not risk making myself look a complete idiot by saying that the only Hammonds I had ever heard of were organs.

Chrissy, it has been fascinating. this organ has been sitting malfunctionly in my studio for months. I traded a nice set of drums for it
after trying in vain to get it serviced I've decided to dig in and do it myself.

The recap went well enough for my first one. I put it back in the organ and it sounded much better! Success!

Until I turned on the vibrato, at which point a loud 60hz hum rained on my parade.
Now I'm troubleshooting that. Checking the ground connections and reflowing some of my solder joints.

If I can't fix it soon I can just use the organ without vibrato for a while. I can barely play the thing anyway!

Bad or corroded ground? Random hums and ground loops can be awful to find. Did you replace ALL of the caps, including small bypass caps? I had a Dynaco 120 that was fine, except for a bad 0.1 uf bypass cap that shorted to ground.
