INGENIVM 1959

I like using my lathe to make pens for m and to offer to some family and friends, here is one of my last creations.

INGENIVM 1949 was created to be offered to my father on his birthday, hence the 1949 number given to the pen as is his birth year.

The pen was all made using black and ripple brown ebonite, even the rings. The filling mechanism is very similar with the one used by Parker Vacumatics but does not use the diaphragm, instead I used orings to create the downstroke and upstroke pressure that fills the pen. It takes 2ml of ink, quite enough for long writing periods.

Its a fat pen with 15mm in cap and 13,6mm in the barrel. I have installed a Conklin steel nib made by Bock with shoulder-width of 8.4mm and visible nib length 23mm for an overall nib length of 35mm , total length posted is 13,5 cm

The pen was later engraved with the INGENIVM brand logo (Portuguese cross), model number and production year. Engraving was done using a CNC engraving mill but the pen was entirely made by hand using my lathe. No taps or dies are used to make the threads. Cap thread is a 4 entrance thread to make screwing and unscrewing faster and more comfortable.

Truly elegant, Piscov! I thought you were a marvel with your Waterman repair (over on FPB) but this shows your innate artistry as well. Your father must be a very proud man to have you as a son.

I have to ask: if you didn't use taps/dies, how on Earth did you cut the threads?

Jon, I am particularly touched by your kind words, you are very gentle.

The threads are made the old way. Here is a video that shows how its done. I use a bit to make the threading ( internal and external) The video only shows one entry threads but for multiple entry threads you must make some adjustments. Here you can find some info on that.

Using taps and dies brings a huge constrain to pen making. You can only do some diameters and some thread pich. Most end up making always the same external diameters for barrels and caps...... You need to buy each tap and die for each diameter/thread you want to make and on top of that it is very expensive to buy each set of tap and dies for internal and external threads.

Using this process I can make any diameter I want and the threading pich my lathe allows ( a lot)
For instance if I want to make a 4 start point thread like old Pelikans 36TPI 4 start threads I make 4X 9TPI spaced according to my lathe dial.

It takes a time to master, but is much, much better!!

Okay that is one elegant and sophisticated looking pen. I especially like the colours, they complement each other nicely and the engravings give it not only some personality but uniqueness. Your father should be very pleased with his pen.

Hi Heath, sorry for only replying you now. I don't know why but I did not received the notification email.

This is a Cigar leather case pen style, carries 3 large pens. I also have a few from Waterman. I think they were never sold to public but offered to the dealership owners as gifts. Some time ago I was lucky to find a few with for 2 and 3 pens. They are really nice and ideal for protecting pens. I ca put my Delta Dolce Vita an Montblanc 149 inside at the same time with no problem, and also works great with thinner pens like a Pelikan 400.

To all others, please take a look at the new pen I´ve made the INGENIVM NR II and give me some feedback.
