In search of a notebook

I'm looking for a fountain pen friendly notebook that is A5 size. I want it to have at least twice as many pages as a Moleskine. No Tomoe River paper either. I want a thinker paper than that.

Can someone recommend anything if such a notebook even exists?

At the moment I use something from Fabriano and Paperchase; You never know what you are going to get with the Paperchase brand, but the ones with Italian made paper are good. I have often bought them randomly on sale, all kinds of covers, some are very decorative, others are simpler, any color. Some have lots of pages, and come with similar elastic band to Moleskine. These handle wet pens and even dip pens well.

One of my favorites is Fabriano, mostly because I can get it in stores here, at least the EcoQua line. I have found the A5 size (or close) in spiral back and stapled together. I have used them for years, carried them around and they have held up well. Fabriano has fancier paper too, but the basic wood pulp paper holds wet pens well. The current notebook I have is red, 85gr m2 paperweight, and have 40 sheets of paper, (I guess 20 sheets, folded and stapled in the back; in other words 80 pages).

Some of my favorite pens are on the dry side, at least not particularly wet; an EF Pelikan with slight flex, a firm nib Parker 51, a coupe of firm nib Chinese pens. These write on any paper trouble free, I can get almost any notebook, any price range and it`s`fine. I use these for Moleskine paper. I tend to use a lot of Pelikan 4001 ink, blue-black and dark green, and sometimes Diamine Burgundy Rose.

I don`t know if you have other particular requirements or problems like feathering or ink bleeding through the paper.

I have two favorite notebooks, Midori Codex [ 184 sheets (368 pages)] and Taroko Design Enigma which uses 68 gr Tomoe River paper. I recommend you get the breeze and see if you like it. I also love Marumann Mneomysne Notebooks Though they don't go beyond 80 sheets..

Stalogy meets most of your requirements, unless you need a hardback notebook.
Leuchtturm has thicker paper but not as many pages.

In addition to stalogy (I do agree it's a great option) there is also hobonichi, but it depends on what style of paper you prefer (grid? Dot? Lined?) You can search out many options using Cosmo Air Light (75gsm) paper. I am currently using a Galen Leather notebook with 288 pages. Taroko Shop (on Etsy) also makes various sizes and page count options.

There is Clairfointane too. I have not used it too often, main reason is only one store in town have had them, and their selection hasn`t been wide. However, the paper is fine and they have a good selection of A5 and a few slightly larger than the A standard. I did a quick check and the sheet number vary from around 32 to 90+ in these sizes.

This thread makes me think I should order more from the web just to try different qualities. In my search for paper I see Lamy have their own bleed proof notebooks. I used to buy Crown Mill paper and notepads, they were my favorite at one time. Does anyone make notebooks of their paper?

Also, I have personally not clicked with the beloved Rhodia, Leuchtturm, Clairefontaine type paper. Too slick or something? And often not bright white which is my preference for showing off ink colours.

Wanting to avoid the thinner pages of TR paper you best stay with Rhodia, Clairfontaine, Midori, style A5 notebooks. Galen Leather had a nice 400 page book, soft cover, and its a TR old stock paper as I recall or was when I purchased mine. I started using it in June 2022 and I'm about 2/3 of the way through the book currently.

P.S. Ayush is really good, but not thin. Also hard to get a really good range (shipping from the actual company in India is costly).

I read it quite the opposite, Tomoe River isn`t that the smooth, hard paper, nice but often thin. A slight typo might have mislead us. The original poster has not yet replied at all.

... No Tomoe River paper either. I want a thinker paper than that...

Midori, which I love, is cream-colored, and I believe the OP wants bright white.

I just bought a Leuchtturm A-5 grid. I prefer a US composition size notebook, so I'll see it this works.

They look pretty very nice. But so pricey. Taroke Design is much cheaper, yet less elegant

I looked at the Midori Codex that you recommended and thought the same when I saw the price.

I bought one of those Hippo Noto notebooks when they first started. I have not used it yet, but it seems well made and looks good. However the price of them now to ship out immediately is extravagant. I have been very pleased with the Seven Seas journals in the past, but they have changed the paper, and not sure I would like it now, but I have a few of them, and love them.
