    Default Mixing Walnut Crystals.

    Hello,

I've read that a ratio of 1 teaspoon of walnut crystal with half a cup of distilled water makes a decent ink consistency. Having never used, nor mixed ink before, I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions/tips on doing this. The consistency is to be used with a dip pen.

Sounds like too much water to me. I tend to go with 1/2 tsp crystals to four tsp water or thereabouts, until I like the colour. I also add a little gum arabic (if the crystals aren't a premix). Remember, it's easy to add more water, but you can't take it away.

    Hello,

Thank you very much, mizgeorge. That is the mix I shall use. Much obliged. I remember now what I was supposed to remember to get when I remembered to order the walnut crystals. Gum arabic. Bugger, bugger damn. I so hope Amazon have some in stock.

Edit,.... Just looked on Amazon- I wasn't too sure whether to buy fluid/powder/crystals of Gum Arabic, but I then noticed a little bottle of the stuff sold under 'Winsor & Newton' name in liquid form so I have bought that.

    Thanks again mizgeorge.

As you mentioned, a common ratio is 1 teaspoon of walnut crystals to half a cup of distilled water. You can adjust this ratio to achieve your desired consistency, experimenting with more or less water if needed. Once the crystals are dissolved, strain the liquid through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove any solid particles or sediment. This will help ensure a smooth ink consistency for your dip pen. Moreover, before using the ink with your dip pen, it's a good idea to test it on a scrap piece of paper. Dip your pen into the ink and check the consistency and color. If the ink is too thick, you can add a small amount of distilled water to thin it out. Conversely, if it's too watery, you can dissolve more walnut crystals and add them to the mixture.

    Hello,

    Thank you for that, auerkadin.
I'm off to buy a roll of muslin from Amazon.

I mixed up some walnut crystallized powder with water, no gum arabic, and I've been using the same bottle for about three years, and it still works fine. What is the gum arabic for, and how much do you use?
    Thanks!
