Default EFNIR: Rohrer & Klingner Ebony

Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Rohrer & Klingner Ebony

This is review #286 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: This was a limited edition ink from 2023. I don't know if you can still get it, but you can see pictures at Vanness. The bottle includes the words "iron gall nut ink".

The ink is dark grey with a purple undertone, but you really don't see that in this fine a nib, where it looks varying shades of grey, depending on how wet it's flowing. Without anything darker nearby, it sometimes looks black from this nib. I haven't noticed rapid oxidizing of the ink as it dries or ages. Cleaning was quick and easy with plain water.

All the images look close to what my eyes see, though they lack any hint of the purple undertone.

Line width (The "I" in "Ink:". Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100m. The scale is 330m, with eleven divisions of 30m each. The line width for this ink is roughly 326m. With 286 inks measured, the average line width is 297m.)

Microscope image (400x. Right is with microscope software, left with a smart phone camera. Neither shows the detail or colors my eyes see.)

Whoa! Such lovely flowers and butterflies! Can this really be from an understated ink like R&K Ebony?

I don't have any of your comparison inks, but dark muted grays are all right with me. But I do have a perhaps unrelated question: is that a Penmanship nib in your Prera?

And as for the story, uh-oh...descending to-a fully stocked wine cellar? Or something more dangerous? Judging by the ghostly moans and wails it's likely the latter.

In either case, can't wait for the next installment. Thanks so much, Liz, for the Tuesday Treat of review and story.

Thanks for another Tuesday treat review and our favorite ink-com
It looks like another nice charcoal ink, perfect for your gorgeous zentangles

Love those butterfly/ flower / array (antenna) effects. Really nice

Did the ink have the classic rusted iron scent when touched your fingers?

Yes, pretty stuff hiding in that unassuming ink.

In a way, this might be a greyed purple. I'll do a chroma in a while and see.

Yes. Same nib I've been using since the first review. Note the line that says: "Pen: Pilot Prera w/ Penmanship EF nib"

Hopefully they don't find Marsell's ghost down there!

Hmm. The color would be good, but it writes a rather fat line. Zentangles are easier with a finer line. Though I guess if one used a larger card than I usually do, that would be OK. (And thank you!)

Yeah, this one was fun under the microscope.

I didn't notice, but my sense of smell isn't that strong.

Here's the chroma, but the color is off - the top should be brighter and more like Creamsicle orange, more yellow, less red. The purple should lean bluer, especially in the paler areas.

Ok! Normally Essri/Registrars have that scent especially when the ink touches the fingers....

Here's a photo of the chroma. The colors are much closer to what my eyes see, but the paler parts are washed out and I couldn't get them back:
