Default Something wrong; ~site often losing my replies!!

This forum site always requests me to sign in a SECOND time whenever I post anything and hit the submit button... Then it only occasionally posts what I wrote after re-signing me in; ~quite often it just hangs up on a blank site page while everything I wrote is lost. I'm even copying this now because it already has been lost once in this double sign-in bind!

What browser are you using? Can you try a different one?

When you log in, do you check the "Remember me" box?

Do you have Chrome set to delete all cookies on exit? If so, create an exception for FPGeeks.

Those are the two most likely probabilities, to my mind.

I use Chrome and Safari. All I do is to check the Remember Me box when I sign in (actually you need to select it immediately before). I never sign out unless I clear cookies and history and get signed out automatically.

OK, here's what this particular problem is on my Win10 PC using Chrome. After posting something in a thread here and clicking on "submit" I always get re-asked for another log-in (??). But if I use the log-in link on the top of the asking page I'll simply go to a forum blank page and also lose whatever I wrote! However if I instead log-in again in the area provided on the lower middle of the asking page then I get returned to an automatically completed post and everything is fine....

{test of remember me.....} Ok, and if I do check the 'remember me' box (which I just found) on my initial log-in then I'm not asked to log-in again after hitting "submit" on a post. -So now everything is even finer....

Nope. Thus time it didn't; -I checked that box but still had to resign in again after I hit "submit" on my posting! But at least now when I log in again on the bottom/middle of the page instead of at the top I don't lose my post as it automatically generates again after my new log in...

    Skip,

Are you logging out of the site (e.g. at the end of the day or whatever)? If you're using a personal computer / device, I wouldn't (I never do). If you're not intentionally logging out, then we're back to the idea that your browser is deleting cookies or site data for you, which is a setting you can adjust - either for all websites or for this specific website.

It happens to me, too. It is not the Chrome browser, it happens on Microsoft Edge. Try typing in your reply and then hitting the Reply button without any long pauses. In the case of this board, "long pauses" seems to be a few minutes of inactivity. This forum seems to be fairly quick to automatically log users out.

If it's the forum, it's very quirky, because it's never logged me out - not on Windows 10 with Firefox, and not on Android with Chrome.

That (everything lost while..) is the real teeth-grinder for me on this site. Hell, it even happens if you return to another open page briefly to verify/copy info re what you're writing -- only 5 seconds & it's all gone!! I've taken to copying my posting before looking away, just in case. Or tried to....but all too often, remember it 1 second after the old page opens and....grrrrr!!

And, ftr, it happens on my Android/Chrome too. It's not the browser per se - it's the antiquated software this site is written in.

I'd venture that's becuz you checked the [ ]Remember Me block when you logged in. Same here. Only time it's asked me to log in was the couple times I've done a system reboot & cleared cookies & such. YMMV but, that's me! Another thought - maybe your browser Settings?

Try copying your post before actual posting? Though previously, the reply box has always 'remembered' even when I forget.

That's the safest way and I often remember to do this. But so far, as long as I re-sign in at the lower middle of the page's box, I get my reply posting correctly reinserted. Re-signing in at the top of the page is a resulting blank page disaster!

It's never logged me out either and I've been here for 11 years. First with Windows and Windows Explorer or Firefox and more recently with Mac and Safari or Chrome. It never even logged me out when I used Tapatalk on my old Android phone.
If the "Remember Me" box is always checked then it can only be a personal privacy setting such as "sign me out when I power off" or something similar. It's not something that FPGeeks is controlling that's for sure. It's not sophisticated enough.

It's nothing to do with "power off" or deleting cookies after closing a page either as it happens in the middle of working within this forum..
For instance, I was signed in with 'remember me' well checked when I hit 'reply with quote' for this posting. ~And it immediately come back with "you can't do this because you're not signed in"
~Thinking HUH???, I re-signed in at the page's lower boxes that are set up for it and it then came back with your quote inserted and is letting me type this in...
But now this time when I hit "submit reply" for this it will work because it always works ok when there's a 'quote' waiting in the box. But if I hit "submit reply" w/o their being a quote it will again request yet another sign in! It's nothing to do with what's set up in my Win10 or Chrome browser because I'm in other forums and NEVER get all this re-sign in nonsense...
AFA it working ok for some users and not for others, maybe it's something to do with when folks joined this forum? Perhaps some of it's software was incorrectly updated so some of the later joiners get this garbage?

Oh, and it always works when you want to edit your posting. It will wait forever while a post is being edited and changed. ~Which AFAIC is yet another sign that it's not something set up in my browser causing those re-sign in problems...

FPGeeks hasn't been updated because there is no-one around to update it. I have no explanation for why this problem only affects you and not other members.

    Skip,

Cookies can become "corrupted", for lack of a better term. Browser updates can include new "security" features. It's worth checking these settings.

The only other thing I can think is to make sure the date, time, and time zone setting on your computer is correct and automatically synchronizing. Also, go into your "Settings" here on FPG and make sure your Date & Time Options settings match your computer's. (It's under "Settings" at the top right, then "General Settings" on the left, then scroll down a ways.) When your computer time / timezone doesn't match what a server thinks they should be, strange things can happen. I don't see any other settings that would be likely to impact this.

I am not trying to lay blame anywhere, just suggesting things which are within your control that you can check / reset / adjust to see if it helps. Sadly, no one here has access to investigate this on the FPGeeks server, so there's no hope from that side. The only hope is if something you do triggers a reset.

    Liz
