Default Parker 61 - cracks in the barrel

    Greetings everyone.

I recently picked up a Parker 61 mark 2 at an auction. I haven't done anything to it yet, but it is in fairly good condition. I hope to have the opportunity to flush out the capillary tube this weekend. I have observed a couple of crack running the length of the barrel from the ring by the thread and along the tube. I'm wondering about the best way to repair those. I have seen the plastic cement for models suggested. Is this a good option? I'd welcome any suggestions. Thanks - Robert

(I can provide photos, if helpful)

I believe if you search for “MEK” as your search term here and at FPN you’ll likely find something helpful regarding fixing this. The plastic used in 61s had a tendency to shrink and the stress created at the threads by the shrinking is the likely cause of the cracking/splitting so even if you do get it welded back together, it may just split again sadly. That said the nibs in my limited experience with 61s have all been great.

Hi all, I forgot to include in my question do I have to be concerned about damaging the threads as I try to melt things back together?

Thanks for the response. I don't think the plastic has shrunken; I suspect the barrel was over-tightened. The cracks are virtually invisible until the barrel is moved and then they show up.

Regarding the threads: i would think as long as you are careful and don’t get too much solvent on them you should be ok.

    You’re welcome.

Richard’s pens is my first stop for pen repair. And usually i don’t have to go any further.
