    Default A Pen of One's Own: a new installment

    Well...

    Our own Laura N. has an occasional piece on Rick Proppas' Penguin site. A new installment is up, speaking about her relationship to the Parker Duofold her grandfather introduced her to. But, as with all good writers, it is about a lot more than that. She might not make a post about it, but I will, because it is very much about the human side of what we care about in these objects.

    A Parker Man
    "When Men differ in Opinion, both Sides ought equally to have the Advantage of being heard by the Publick;
    and that when Truth and Error have fair Play, the former is always an overmatch for the latter."

    I liked the comment that the pen restoration is more than the pen is worth - never in a million years!

    Owning your Grandfather's pen - Priceless!

    I read the article prior to the post - it is a good article.

    Thanks for sharing Laura N.!

    Thanks for posting Jon

    Great story. I remember plastic slipcovers! My aunt had them. No fountain pens, though. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

    A lovely story. I could even imagine a Norman Rockwell painting of large wooden desk.

    One of my school friend's parents had them as well as plastic runners to protect the carpet.

    That was a fantastic story... I ended spending a fair bit of time tangentially googling duofolds.

    My grandparents had the protective plastic runners you put down on carpet. I remember as a kid seeing one pulled up with the extra spiky underside and thinking as a kid, man that has to permanently pierce the carpet... I thought the plastic was great as it looked like a race track and imagined they were designed with special extra traction along the edges so you'd be able to corner tightly and not slide off It's only now do I understand just how much dirt gets tracked in (especially by smaller ones)

    Thank you Laura.It's a beautiful story vividly told. I'd say that you are a raconteur, like your grandpa.
    It certainly brought to mind my own childhood memories and my beloved grandparents. Thank you again.
