How did this site get overrun by spamers?
The owner left.

It does feel like a spam site now
Sailor Kenshin (November 15th, 2024)
the owner left? no replacement, deputy, vice president to continue with this job? This is so sad. Have been coming to this site less and less because of the spam. Shouldn't you have to register before posting any content on the site?
Not only did the owner leave but, for reasons unknown, he has not appointed an administrator (or moderator) to oversee day to day operations like admitting new members or dealing with spammers. This I will never understand.
I came to FPGeeks many moons ago after one of the FPN's meltdowns. Here I found a friendly and knowledgeable group lacking the heavy handed moderation we see over at FPN. Now it is painful to see this site riddled with spammers.
The sad thing is that FPGeeks has a ton of useful information and a lot of beautiful pictures. Just take a look at some of Christof's many contributions. This site is a very useful resource but is in imminent danger of disappearing.

Websites have a life span, and when they die the information tends to go with them.
Lion & Pen was specifically aimed at finding and preserving info about vintage pens. There were contributors with extensive experience and knowledge I’ve never seen post since the site closed and sucked all the knowledge, links, historical research, and photos with it.
Every death has its own sadness; FPG will die of parental neglect.
And yet we come here to look…
Sad. Is anyone able to get ahold of the owner? I'm sure plenty of you guys woud be happy to take over.

Is there a solution or are we done?

To answer the question...
This is an outlaw town funded by the fountain pen world equivalent of Elon Musk.
Don't know if we're done or not. Can't fix it myself, certainly. But I'll keep coming here for as long as I see something worthwhile, and for now, I still do.
I've been hesitantly going back to FPN a little bit. Nothing against them, really, never had a clash with the moderators as some have complained, but they don't have an art and calligraphy forum. Calligraphy, maybe, but not art. I like the member's drawings in our own forum.

Maybe we all just drown out the trash with content.
Thank you for the kind words Carlos.
I think that we actually have two different problems here.
1. the lack of moderation and the removal of spam posts and
2. the lack of content.
The second problem is not only on this forum the case, but on all the forums I am a member of.
I believe that the time is over when forum members actively participated in generating content. The few who still contribute content are from a different era and are becoming fewer and fewer.
The other members just read along, at best contributing irrelevant comments and at worst starting arguments.
To be honest, I think the golden age of internet forums is coming to an end. Soon there will only be SPAM here...
Sad but true.

Yes, good point about the content.
The trouble is that while some of us do have things to say or to show to others, there are limits to how much of that any one person can do. That's why we need more people. But although we do get the occasional new non-spammer these days, they tend not to stick around.
And now I'm wondering if this post of mine was worth making.

K-
No need to doubt the worth of your post, it made excellent points.
More genuine FP content would help move the spam to the sidelines.
My other pen is a Montblanc.
And my other blog is a tumblr!

The problem I see is attracting new members to post - me for example I came here very recently and thought to be polite and introduce myself and see an into forum composed entirely of spam.
Not exactly a welcoming first impression, and that's problematic.
Interestingly it was a regular poster at FPN who suggested I persist with both as each has its strengths.
Such a shame thought as between these two forums most of the people involved are evidently great people.
