A phrase came to mind, and when I googled it, it turned out to be from Isaac Asimov's short short story A Loint of Paw., which I know I read many years ago.
A criminal named Stein has embezzled $100,000 (the story was published in 1957, so run that through measuringworth.com. $1,080,000 going by the consumer price index for 2023). He then steps into a time machine and travels twenty years plus one day into the future, where he is promptly arrested.
At trial, his defense contends that as the statute of limitations has now taken effect, he cannot be prosecuted. The judge rules in his favor, saying "A niche in time saves Stein".
