Charles Addams cartoon from the New Yorker, 7/13/46.

Much later, Gary Larson would use the same idea for a Far Side cartoon. I don't know if he was aware of Addams's earlier work. Couldn't find Larson's version with a quick online search, although I expect it's on somebody's Pinterest.

I actually remember that cartoon! It was in one of those 'page-a-day' desk calendars I had on my desk. Larson/Far Side has been a lo-o--n-ng time favorite of mine.

Some more Far Side, and a bit of back story. First, this Gary Larson Far Side cartoon.

At the time he did this comic, Larson thought that the well known painting of dogs playing poker was just pop culture kitsch by some unknown artist. He made up the name "Gus Nickerson" because he didn't think it really mattered.

Later, he discovered that the painter was actually quite well known to anyone who'd bothered to do a little research. His name was Cassius Marcellus Coolidge, and the painting everyone knows is actually titled "A Friend in Need". Larson admitted that it really bothered him that he hadn't done a bit more research, and given credit where credit was due.

Why didn't he just Google it? Look at the date on the comic.

Somehow, I can relate to this one. Gary Larson's Far Side, of course.

Easy to see how they came to entrust Roger with the cymbal(s).
Or were they looking down their noses at the time?!?

Here's another Frank and Ernest. It's not my favorite comic strip on the whole, but this is a strong contender for my favorite ever individual comic strip.

I cut it out of a newspaper years ago, and scanned it when it was getting yellowed and falling apart. I've found large numbers of F&E strips online, but not this specific one. Can't make out the date, 19_2. Found a large collection of strips from 1992 and 1982, but again not this one.

I don't have the cartoon - but it was from some time around 1990 +/- Two Frank and Ernest looking dogs outside the White House fence, "I don't know about you, but I kind of like the idea of a bush in the White House."
