    Default Tariffs???

    - A windfall that can replace much of the income from Federal taxes? Trump said so while campaigning.

    - A foolish move that will lead to a global trade war?

    - A move that increases prices to Americans?

What have you read that seems based in enough reality to be persuasive?

A brilliant and well played strategy.

I recommend you read the news rather than spend your time trying to decide how next to showcase your TDS.
CNN is fine, no need to read anything you see fit as describing as the MAGA press.
    It's all there.

Over the past few days Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, Mexico and now Canada have all fallen in line. China is next.
A big win for the USA. WAY more than "Sleepy Joe" and his band of incompetent Cabinet members ever managed to achieve.

Finally we have an administration that is out there, where the action is, doing some work...... and getting it done.
At long last we are prioritizing things like securing our borders and shutting down drug cartels over the prior Administration's (and, I assume yours as well) priority of legitimizing chicks with dicks

A stupid post that points to nothing in economics. No, nothing in trade policy is about "wins" that make you feel better. Consider: why did the US have high tarifs in the 19th Century? Why did the US and Great Britain begin to cut tariffs about 1900? Were high tariffs the only reason that the US was able to industrialize?

You want "stupid" welch, just look in the mirror.
You are an arrogant blowhard. An expert in your mind only. All fluff, no substance.

Oh, and then there's the matter of your ever unsubstantiated false allegations and assertions.
You make them, get called out for them and then retreat to your rat hole with your tail between your legs.
You have yet to document a single one of them as fact. All pure air balls. Want me to list them again for you and the other members??

WSJ: "The Dumbest Trade War in History

President Trump will fire his first tariff salvo on Saturday against those notorious American adversaries . . . Mexico and Canada. They’ll get hit with a 25% border tax, while China, a real adversary, will endure 10%. This reminds us of the old Bernard Lewis joke that it’s risky to be America’s enemy but it can be fatal to be its friend.

Leaving China aside, Mr. Trump’s justification for this economic assault on the neighbors makes no sense. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt says they’ve “enabled illegal drugs to pour into America.” But drugs have flowed into the U.S. for decades, and will continue to do so as long as Americans keep using them. Neither country can stop it.

Drugs may be an excuse since Mr. Trump has made clear he likes tariffs for their own sake. “We don’t need the products that they have,” Mr. Trump said on Thursday. “We have all the oil you need. We have all the trees you need, meaning the lumber.”
    And that's just the beginning.

    China retaliates.

Donald Trump has fired the opening salvo of his trade war, imposing tariffs on China on Tuesday that sparked instant retaliation from Beijing, amid fears for the global economic repercussions.

Moments after US tariffs of 10% came into effect, China swiftly announced an anti-trust investigation into Google. China’s finance ministry also announced 15% tariffs on coal and liquefied natural gas, and 10% on crude oil, farm equipment, large-displacement vehicles and pickup trucks from the US.

China’s commerce ministry and its customs administration said on Tuesday that to “safeguard national security interests” the country was imposing export controls on a raft of critical minerals: tungsten, tellurium, ruthenium, molybdenum and ruthenium-related items.

The commerce ministry also said it was adding the US companies PVH Group and Illumina Inc to its unreliable entity list, opening them to restrictions or penalties, without detailing what the companies were accused of. PVH is a clothing company that owns brands including Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein. Illumina is a biotech company specialising in genomic sequencing that recently partnered with Nvidia on health-related AI tech.

Could it be China? The same China that was just hit with a 10% tariff? Will Chinese companies generously eat that 10%, or maybe pass it on to US consumers?

    Very cursory search says not.
So why was PVH put on an “unreliable entity” list?

Google search says that both companies manufacture in China.

Can accept you found what I could not. ( care to share results?)
Personally, matters not if those prices increase.
But still curious, why was PVH put on an “unreliable entity” list if it manufactures in China?

I just did Google search on such as Tommy Hilfiger manufacturing:

    AI Overview

Tommy Hilfiger clothing is manufactured in China and Vietnam. The brand works with the communities in these factories to ensure the best products are made in the best conditions.

    Explanation

Tommy Hilfiger is owned by PVH Corp., an American clothing company that also owns Calvin Klein. PVH also licenses brands like Kenneth Cole New York and Michael Kors.

Tommy Hilfiger has faced criticism for its manufacturing practices, including allegations that it received and distributed products from Chinese forced labor camps. In response, PVH has committed to improving the lives of workers in its supply chain.
As best I understand, "AI" works as a bif SQL (structured query language) search. The information they link to comes from a large European on-line retailer called The Hut. Sounds like The Hut wants to defend labor practices at Hilfiger and Klein.

Starting in the late '90s, a buddy and I tried to find tools NOT made in China. We couldn't, or not many. Since then, China has stepped up and into high-tech. To chips and such. Around 2005, the market-planning group at my company, the global payment system, told us to prepare to reinforce our presence(s) at the BRIC countries: Brazil, Russia, India, and China. All were expected to make the "great leap" to post-industrial capitalism. Brazil is still swirling between right and left social-political regimes. Putin put all of Russia's profit, from oil and gas exports, into weapons. Russia still makes nothing that anybody else wants. India, run by the Hindu nationalists, dove head-first into attacks on Muslims and Sikhs, exporting tech talent but not tech devices. China made it.

Way back in the 1990s, when I was at GE Information Services, we put energy into "supply chain management", having led in electronic purchasing since the '80s. Got trained in how industry would slice up production, with companies assembling parts from all over. The auto industry, right now, warns that cars are assembled from components that are shipped back and forth and back again among the US, Canada, and Mexico. They cannot make a car within any one country.

(And HTTR...maybe now it is HTTC?)

Thanks, as the searches I did came up with Vietnam and Asian countries.
