It is a remake of an earlier pencil that shared the same name. The earlier pencils are coveted and their prices, while small in comparison to a pen, are quite high.
Very good pencil for sure. You can change out the eraser as well. I have one of there 2 stage sharpeners as well and they take a wicked sharp point.
While this review is of the sharpener he shows the pencils as well.

Yes, the new ones are very good, and the 602 is the right hardness for school or general use.
you're talking about the new palomino blackwing 602, as compared to the eberhard-faber blackwing 602. good for school? yes. it is long. it puts down a dark line. compared to a HB staedtler mars lumograph, line is noticably darker line. darker line, so softer lead? point stays sharp longer, so it's not that soft. it does have an eraser, in black, white, or, now for a couple of bucks more the legacy edition has the original pink colored eraser.
I got this sharpener last week from JetPens and it is pretty amazing. I didn't know about it until your post. My 602s and my Rhodia pencils now hold a much sharper point for much longer.
I really like the new Palomino Blackwings. I never tried the Eberhard-Faber Blackwings so I can't compare the remake to the original--but the Palomino pencils are really nice. They last a long time, they sharpen well, they put down a very dark line with minimal smudging. I use them a lot for marginalia in books and also for marking up documents. The 602 is probably my favorite pencil, followed closely by the Rhodia pencils (though the Rhodia ones are a bit more prone to smudging).
i got a few of these clear caps for my pbw pencils.

i remember as a kid they had the metal caps pictured at the top of this site with the sliding rearward ring that tightens around the pencil barrel:

I am fortunate to have been given a couple of these, plus one of the early ones. Fabulous quality pencils though my preference is still for the original ones.
Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

I use the Palomino Blackwing Pearl now: great for underlining in books. Comfortably soft, dark lines. Feels as good as the original Eberhard Faber Blackwing, which I began using back in '73...I can peg the date because I had a summer job as a file clerk at a law form. One of our lawyers used the Blackwing, and we got his left-overs. Handy for marking a document before sorting, which we did before stuffing the documents into files.
Yes, that's how it was done before micro-computers.
The old Blackwing slogan still holds: "half the pressure - twice he speed".
Oh: good for school? Might be too soft. See Henry Petroski's great engineering book, "The Pencil". Petroski found that John Steinbeck wrote his first drafts using the Blackwing because it was easy on his hand and wrist. He used several pencils at once because the Blackwing won't hold a point for long. It's that soft.
Got mine today ^__^ i went for the Blackwings. No 602. I like the dark lines but i'll ahve to get a papermate eracer or something similar, leaves what i wrote behind to well. i can read what i wrote after eracing it with some pretty heavy force and some light brushing.
I love all the Blackwings--black, white, and grey. Yes, they would be good for school because they won't roll off your desk onto the floor and break the tip of the lead. Also there's plenty of length for the removable eraser, so you don't find yourself with the eraser worn down when the pencil is half it's original length. I buy mine from Amazon, who offers a nice selection.
The pencils are very good. Very expensive however.
The sharpener is just a rebadged KUM sharpener and not made by Palomino, so if you are not bothered about the Blackwing branding, the KUM may be a little cheaper.
