    Default Esterbrook Repair Recommendation

I recently acquired a Esterbrook SJ fountain pen with a 1551 firm medium nib. By the look of it will need a sac replacement. Right now I am planning to send it to the Andersons at http://andersonpens.net/. Are the Andersons the best bet for giving my SJ a tune up?

Nice pen. If all it needs is a sac replacement, any pen repair specialist can do it. How do you know the sac needs replacing, btw?

Tyler Dahl restored my 30's Parker Duofold Jr. and he works on a lot of Esterbrooks from what I can tell. I would not have any problem with him working on any of my Esterbrooks.

Agreed. Brian and Lisa are classy pen sellers and they do know their Esterbrooks, so I would feel very safe sending them my Estie for repair.

I would imagine there isn't anything Brian can't do to an Esterbrook, that is his area of expertise. The fact of the matter is that replacing a sac in an Estie is one of the easiest pen repairs of all - many people just buy the materials and do it themselves. I plan on doing 3 or 4 of them myself in a week or two when I have a bit of free time.

I don't know for sure if it needs the sac replaced. Just figured that since the pen is around 50 years old that it would probably need replacing.

Thanks for the speedy responses. I will post again when I get the pen back from its tune-up.

I absolutely agree with you that if the sac has not been replaced in that length of time it should be replaced, even if it still sounds and feels pliable.

Even better - do it yourself. For the price of one repair you can get the tools and materials you need to fix a dozen pens. Putting a new sac on a pen is not much harder than screwing the lid on a Mason jar.
