    Hi Mike
As that case was a custom order I don't feel comfortable telling you how much it was, I can tell you that single pen cases start at £55 sterling Emperor size cases are more expensive. I also make a cylindrical Emperor case which is the most expensive single pen case I make although it is significantly cheaper than some of the other single pen cases available.

As i mentioned in an earlier post I planned to make more bags in 2017 so when a gap appeared in my order book I thought it would be a good time to make one.

The first leather I bought was a red part hide from a local fabric shiop I kept some for when i had improved my skills enough to make a decent job.

The plan is to make a bag with space for a notebook or two in the back and one or two rows of pens in the front. The first step is to make a set of templates.

    20170330_142359[1] by my0771, on Flickr

After making the front and rear templates I made the inside pocket templates. Next was to start cutting the leather.

    20170331_083312[1] by my0771, on Flickr

Normally I would have lined the inside with suede but I wanted something lighter so I have gone with cream leather.

    20170331_110415[1] by my0771, on Flickr

I did a trial fit of the front and back panels as I was doing this I realised that three pockets would make the bag too large so I decided to stop at two.

    20170401_070510[1] by my0771, on Flickr

Making the pen slots in cream leather I have made these to take 21 mm diameter pens like a M B 149 I expected to get 10 slots however it looks like 7 is the limit so I am currently reviewing the cream leather and may switch to red suede.

I did not really like the cream leather pen slots they looked a little clunky.

    20170401_144439[1] by my0771, on Flickr

I decided to make another version in red suede which would give more pen slots.

When I was happy with the suede pen slots I attached them to the front panel

I have toyed with the idea of adding piping to the edges so I made a sample normally piping would be stitched in place with the bag inside out which is not an option on this bag.

There are still a couple of challenges with this bag stitching and finishing the edges not to mention the handle which I need to work out fortunately selling the bag is not one of them as I received a message from a lady who wants to buy it.

Edges are by far the hardest part of leather work in my opinion. This is where my edges are at the moment once glued leather can be sanded.

    20170406_102519[1] by my0771, on Flickr

After sanding it is usual to use some type of edge paint to seal and give a finish to the edges this is also sanded until a smooth finish is achieved.
Red edge paint is not easy to find in the UK for some reason there is a company in France and another in Italy that make some but getting it is quite difficult.
So I am currently considering other options including piping and wrapping the edges I will post some sample pictures later.

Although I have ordered some edge paint which is actually a coating which sits on top of the edges that have been joined.
I am also considering this option where a thin strip of leather is wrapped around the edge and then stitched in place.

I don't have lots of this leather so there is no room for mistakes

I have decided to go with the edge binding option as in the sample above, A thin strip of the red leather is cut and skived or thinned to reduce its thickness to around a third to allow it to fold over the edge.

I thought i would share this case with you

    20170404_081122[1] by my0771, on Flickr

I have increased the thickness of the kydex I am using to give even more protection it is only by 0.3 mm to 1 mm so it wont make a huge difference.

After the application of some heat and quite a bit of pressure this is what we have.

    20170404_083507[1] by my0771, on Flickr

At this point I realised that I had ran out of black suede so while my supplier sent some over night I started to look at the outer cover.

    20170405_130826[1] by my0771, on Flickr

Once the suede arrived I wrapped the moulded kydex in it.

    20170405_124251[1] by my0771, on Flickr

I was also able to finish moulding the outer cover* and add some dye.

    20170405_154224[1] by my0771, on Flickr

Before the dye had dried out completely I made the stitching holes there is a deliberate mistake here.

    20170405_221246[1] by my0771, on Flickr

What mistake I hear you say. basically I punched the first stitching holes in the flap in the wrong place and had to start over.

    20170406_145354[1] by my0771, on Flickr

After taking that backwards step I made the replacement back section.

    20170406_160937[1] by my0771, on Flickr

This time I did a better job cutting out and making stitching holes

My mistake with the mahogany case was with the stitching holes normally I cut the shape first and then mark the stitching holes for some reason I changed my metyhod and punched a hole in the wrong place I could have trimmed the edge and made the flap thinner but I decided to unpick the*stitching and replace the back panel.

    20170407_075548[1] by my0771, on Flickr

Here is the finished case*ready to be shipped to its new home.

The red case has progressed*a little*over the last few days the new edge coat has now*arrived and I have been experimenting with it. I have learned a lot from this bag.

    20170419_092602[1] by my0771, on Flickr

I have started stitching around the edges as you can see from the picture above, it is very difficult to get this edging to look right even when the binding piece is perfectly straight it stretches as it is glued in place.

I have very little of this leather and should have made a smaller bag I have spoken to my supplier but this colour was discontinued however they have managed to find me a flame red hide which is on its way so I plan on making another actually I had to buy 25 square feet of this leather*so I will be making a few bags* I have a number of designs in mind.

While I was waiting for my other projects to dry I started remaking the red leather bag it is really surprising just how much leather is needed to make a bag. The first steps were cutting out the main panels using the templates I made earlier.

    20170508_115134[1] by my0771, on Flickr

As this bag will have a lift out section to hold pens I realised that I actually needed to make the inner section that holds the pens first. The main body is made from grey board which I get from an art supplier.

    20170508_122052[1] by my0771, on Flickr

Normally I would make the pen slots on the leather and then glue that to the board I found this caused problems in the last bag so I have wrapped the board in leather and am stitching the pen slots though the leather and board.

I think I have worked out the best way to make the bag around the pen slots, it will involve some piping I don't buy it in I make my own.

I have made two test pieces of different sizes one is using 3 mm para cord as an inner core and the second uses 1 mm leather thong as its core.

    20170517_131643[1] by my0771, on Flickr

In order to make the piping I cut a strip of leather 1.6 metres long and 20 mm wide the challenge is it is 1.2 mm thick and ideally it needs to be half of that.

    20170517_131416[1] by my0771, on Flickr

I decided to go with the thinner core which I then glued in place. The red mass in the background is the leather shaved off the back.

I also cut a replacement gusset piece which is wider than the first. I also skived (thinned) the edges of this and created more waste.

The final component to make for this bag is the flowers I think I may have gotten a little carried away as I only needed one or two.

After making the flowers I cut the inside and outside for the back panel and front flap.

    20170520_155429[1] by my0771, on Flickr

I tack stitched these two pieces together to allow me to position the magnetic catch and the outer flower which I think will be used to open the flap.

    20170520_192925[1] by my0771, on Flickr

You can also see the stitching holes and the piping the cream leather will be the inside colour and the red is the outside.

Thanks Hawk I appreciate your input.

This is the inside out view of the back / front flap panel being stitched together when I got to the point where the gusset needed to be attached I included it into the stitching line.

I don't do videos but I took this picture as soon as the bag was turned the right way around fortunately this time everything worked out. the most challenging part is stitching the bottom. I left the inner and outer sections of the back panel separate so I could stitch them together individually.

The final stages of this project are to create the strap and its mounts. I decided to make the mounts first.

    20170611_143104[1] by my0771, on Flickr

Once I had worked out what size I wanted I cut some matching strips of leather and added some shape for the brass fittings. I chose full rings rather "D" rings as it will give more flexibility and reduce stress on the mounts.
To add extra strength I added an extra layer of cream leather it will never be seen but we will know it is there.

    20170611_162236[1] by my0771, on Flickr

One end of this mount is for the outside and the other goes through a slot cut into the side of the bag. I have made stitching holes on both ends and will stitch through the side of the bag.

Here is the strap mount in place.
