Wow that was a huge effort and a great outcome. I am sure you did learn a lot from that bag! Heaps of work in it by the looks of it.

Very smart and professional result, I am sure the owner will be chuffed. One always appreciates things a lot more when being able to see them crafted.

Fantastic job on the bag. I liked the 'play by play' narrative and photos of the project. There is a lot of unseen, thereby unappreciated work involved in all of your projects.

Thanks guys I can confirm the owner is happy with her hand bag she assures me she will be showing it off at pen shows across America so some of you may get to see it in person.

There is more detail than I shared here and FPN the full story is on my blog my63leather.wordpress.com should anyone wish to waste some time. Lots of my other projects are there too.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment

It seems like sometime since I shared a single pen case with you so here is my latest effort.

I call this an Emperor size case as the first one I made was for a Namiki Emperor pen.

The starting point is a flat sheet of Kydex a piece of dowel and a spare piece of leather.

    20170720_195553[1] by my0771, on Flickr

After applying some heat and rolling the Kydex around the dowel we have a cylinder.

    20170720_214557[1] by my0771, on Flickr

I am not showing the next step as it involves melting the Kydex to weld the edges and to round over the end to form a tube. Once the tube was formed I wrapped the whole thing in orange suede.

    20170721_191323[1] by my0771, on Flickr

There is a good reason to wrap the whole of the outer part of the tube in suede if the suede did not go to the bottom then the edge would show through when the outer leather is formed around it.
As the next stage involves wet leather being formed around the tube I have covered the tube in black film to protect it from water and in the future dye.

    20170722_154202[1] by my0771, on Flickr

The first part of the forming process is to soak the leather then using metal workers grips with wide jaws which I have wrapped in leather to help stretch the leather around the tube.

    20170722_154202[1] by my0771, on Flickr

Chocolate dye one of my favourites.
    20170722_152744[1] by my0771, on Flickr

I left the leather to dry for sometime there is a point where the dye is dry and the leather is still wet enough to form around the tube. Sounds mad but it is true.

    20170723_153043[1] by my0771, on Flickr

The top section remains in a plastic bag to slow down the drying process as it cannot be formed until the bottom section is finished.

The next step involves a pair of dividers a stitching (pricking) iron and a seriously sharp knife after the bottom section has been trimmed the top is formed glued and stitched.

    20170724_103735[1] by my0771, on Flickr

I don't line the inside of the lid I tried it once and the top would not come off

    20170724_103749[1] by my0771, on Flickr

Both pieces are now trimmed and edges ready for final assembly.

You made cases like this for Sharon and myself awhile back. We're still impressed with the product. Presently, we house the Wahl Eversharp Decoband Fountain Pens in them. The pens are extremely happy in their home.

I thought it would be good to share a different project with you. It is still pen related. I n the past I had separate threads for boxes of different sizes. I don't make boxes much now so I thought I would post this one here.

It is an oak framed box with marine plywood top and bottom veneered in burr walnut veneer.

    20170810_093610[1] by my0771, on Flickr

    The inside is red suede.

In the past I have always made plain pen cases I have been thinking for some time that I would like to make something different.

I don't think of myself as creative and was searching for inspiration eventually I looked at my feet.

    20170818_214714[1] by my0771, on Flickr

So I decided to try and make my own brogue pattern. I started with this.

    20170830_084237[1] by my0771, on Flickr

After playing around with a set of dividers and a hole punch I came up with this.

    20170830_194330[1] by my0771, on Flickr

I used some antiquing dye to give this effect.

    20170831_084610[1] by my0771, on Flickr

I was not to happy with the first effort so I started again. And came up with this.

    20170831_154104[1] by my0771, on Flickr

After antiquing it looks like this

    20170831_191847[1] by my0771, on Flickr

A design like this needs a large case so I am going to make a large case to put it on.

This is my largest mould at the moment

    20170901_090753[1] by my0771, on Flickr

I have cut some marine plywood and laminated it together to give the required thickness of around 30 mm.

    20170901_172540[1] by my0771, on Flickr

    More to follow.

    Thanks for looking

Before I could mark out the mould for the main outer body of this case I needed to make the inner section and to do that I needed another mould.

    20170902_152754[1] by my0771, on Flickr

After making the mould I just had to heat the kydex sheet and form it over the mould.

    20170902_171152[1] by my0771, on Flickr

Once I had formed all three I wrapped them in electric blue suede.

Here is my first pressing from this mould I discovered during this process the pins were needed to assist in getting the mould together, Unfortunately I put the first pins in the wrong place.

    20170905_203634[1] by my0771, on Flickr

This white kydex piece creates the shape at the bottom of the case.

    20170906_132559[1] by my0771, on Flickr

Once I had the kydex piece I was able to start forming the outer leather cover over the kydex

    20170906_144216[1] by my0771, on Flickr

After a few hours of working the leather I had a shape I was happy with.

    20170906_153454[1] by my0771, on Flickr

The point where the kydex ends is clearly visible but will be covered by the strap although I may remake this piece.

    20170906_163628[1] by my0771, on Flickr

These are the components waiting for assembly however I am unsure I started this wanting to make a brogue style case in antique tan. I am thinking it might look really good in black or another solid colour without the brogue pattern.
The card template is to allow me to experiment with different shapes and points to get one I like.

While I am trying to decide how to finish the large Emperor case I was catching up on what some of my Instagram followers were doing, One of them had recently been promoted in the USAF the pictures of the insignia prompted me to make a case that would keep fountain pens safe during a deployment.

I formed a kydex shell and the formed the wet veg tanned leather around it.

    20170908_132051[1] by my0771, on Flickr

I found a picture of the insignia and printed it off I used a scribing tool to transfer the image to the still wet leather.

    20170908_125854[1] by my0771, on Flickr

Using a special carving knife I cut the design into the leather.

    20170908_132003[1] by my0771, on Flickr

The next step was to apply some leather dye I chose Navy blue I decided to use red suede for the inside.

Once I had decided on the colours I cut out a back panel I tried to cut out the shape and punch the holes for stitching to save time later but this failed and I had to start over.

I cut a replacement panel and shaped a piece of kydex to form the back support. I covered it in the red suede ready to join the two pieces together.

    20170911_132122[1] by my0771, on Flickr

After the trial fit of the front and back panel I added some glue to hold the pieces while I made the stitching holes and stitched the case together.

    20170911_175609[1] by my0771, on Flickr

when the glue had dried I removed all of the clips and positioned the strap.

    20170911_194112[1] by my0771, on Flickr

    Stitching finished

    20170912_210935[1] by my0771, on Flickr

    Trimming was next.

    20170913_073635[1] by my0771, on Flickr

After trimming I sanded the edges and dyed them the same colour as the rest of the case.

Here are my final pictures of the Sergeants case I think it has worked out OK.

The shape of the Kydex inner pieces make this case extremely strong I believe this style is the strongest of all the cases I make.
