    Default Harlequin/Jester WARNING

    Dearest Fountain Pen Community,

I know this community has always had strong morals and values
honesty, which is why I've never had any worries dealing with
anyone in the community. As the community comes together to
help protect themselves from less scrupulous individuals, I and
several others felt it was important to bring a few details to light
in order to help protect others in the community.

    Harlequin/Jester/PlumeDeArlequin, a moderator on Fountain
Pen Network and the operator of the Virtual Pen Posse (VPP)
Facebook Group and IRC Chat has been involved in some fraud
within the community. As part of the anniversary celebration he
got TWSBI to donate a new rose gold pen to give away. The
person who won the pen, Benz, caused some suspicion within
the community. A new member to both Facebook and the group,
with the only information available being his birthday - the same
date as VPP's anniversary. His only post seemed to be to enter
the contest. His post included the chat names of members who
had no idea who this person was and had never seen him before
as well as having matching handwriting to previous posts by
Harlequin (http://imgur.com/a/CR2Cw). Upon winning his only
posts were to then promote the group to new members.

After some investigation, the group found an account named
BENZ on Fountain Pen Geeks, whose only posts were to
promote the VPP even prior to having joined the group. All posts
were signed with his signature "^_^" or "~_^", the same emoticon
that has appeared in his posts and on his profile in FPN. http://imgur.com/a/hiR5x (the first post is FPG, second is FPN,
    third is VPP)

The final nail in the coffin for the group was when BENZ showed
up in the chat room, the hostmask assigned by the server (the
numbers, the server, and the hexidecimal code to mask the IP) is
exactly the same as the one from Harlequin. We consulted a
tech expert who confirmed there is no way this came from two
different people. His argument is that he has a dyanamic ip,
which changes every time he connects, which is not true.
Dynamic changes on a daily/weekly basic and logging in within
hours of himself shows the same hostmask. From December
    18th, 2013:

    BENZ (~webchat@209.179.109.euirc-85d70b0e) joined the
    channel.
    Harlequin (~12@209.179.109.euirc-85d70b0e) joined the
    channel.

and from May 18, 2013. In this second conversation he
proceeded to address members regarding things they posted on
separate facebook pages, and addressed them by real names –
members who did not recognize BENZ.

    [11:48] * Jester (~...@209.179.103.euirc-7c533992) Quit (Client
    exited_)
    [11:49] * Guest7287 (~...@209.179.103.euirc-7c533992) has
    joined #penposse
    [11:49] * Guest7287 is now known as Jester[19:32] * Guest7430 (~12@209.179.103.euirc-7c533992) has
    joined #penposse
[20:20] * Guest7430 uses the name BENZ on fpn

for visual proof, http://imgur.com/a/EHKCM has screenshots of logs - redacted to protect other members.

There is no way this could be unless they came from the same
internet connection. As a group, we are deeply disappointed that
this level of fraud would go on in order to essentially steal a pen
from the group. We attempted to discuss this with him, but he
denied it until confronted with evidence, at which point he
ignored us. He has been given the opportunity to come clean or
clear his name, neither of which he did. He denied us and his
only reasoning was that we were trying to steal the chat from him
and “were trouble”. We gave him a further 24 hours, which he
made no contact with any of us to even try to prove us wrong. He proceeded to ban us when we tried to tell members of his deceit.

I hope that this information will help everyone, we're concerned
that if this is the level he's willing to go to for a 50$ pen, what
    else may happen.

I second everything that is said here. Also, since we were immediately banned from the Virtual Pen Posse IRC channel and Facebook page upon posting this information, I invite anyone to join us on the EUIRC, on the channel #inkwell. And please also check out the Inkwell Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/4195...66512/members/ .

I'm guessing you haven't been able to post this at FPN, which is troubling, since he is a moderator.

We asked permission there and are giving them the time and space to conduct their own investigation and make whatever decision they feel is best for their group. We hope that it will eventually be allowed.

Not a tech expert but is has always been my understanding of dynamic IP address's that they change randomly and done so by ISP running the internet connection so the chances of two different people logging onto the same type of forum etc being allocated the same IP address on the same day are virtually zero.

Like I said I am no IT expert but to my understanding of how it all works this is the same user using the same computer connection posting as two different people.

If that has been done by a forum administrator just to gain a donated pen is not a good show for the rest of that forums admin team, even more so if they either take no action or fail to support their mod with evidence to prove his innocence.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

All that trouble for a $50 pen? Sounds like an "FPN" (Fountain Pen Nut) alright.

Okay. I have some knowledge of IRC from the past life. There is a remote possibility for more than one with the same ip-hotmask, because of the tilde in front of the loginname bits means that there were no identd running to identify who's who using that one IP. With internet sharing in place, it could've been someone in his/her office or home etc, or himself with different clients whatever. But it's definitely from the same internet connection. Although, I wouldn't go as far as "only $50 pen, who knows what he is capable of" ... Because we can so much judge his acts, not his heart. Only himself and God can.

But seriously, all this for a TWSBI?

Maybe, as in the Market transactions disputes, we can reserve further comment until/unless the party in question takes advantage of replying to this thread. I certainly have *my* thoughts on the matter, having dealt with him before, but I would rather hear his side before that.

yup, the same thing happens in watch forums too. Raffles are purchased for a nominal amount for a genuine watch worth, perhaps a thousand or two bucks. The cost of the raffle ticket and the number of tickets far outweigh the cost of the watch, so it is profitable to the forum. But it gets managed by a mod who has full control over the number of tickets, the collection of money and the outcome of the draw.

The same thing happened a couple of years ago on a $2500 watch. It went to some unknown newbie member. That case was never resolved. These are big stakes at hand with raffle tickets going for $25 to $50 at times, not some $50 pen.

The forum members making the biggest stink about impropriety of the draw got banned from the forum administrator or mod or something.

Mind you it's not just forums

A few years ago my local pet shop held a Christmas raffle for a Marin Fish Tank setup, they ran the raffle for a few months and I bought tickets when it first started, again about halfway through and again about half an hour before the raffle was drawn. In the 3 months the raffle was running they sold just under 3000 tickets, when the draw was announced the winning number was over 5000 and now two years latter the fish tank is still sitting in their window. But now it's back for sale. There was also a supposed change of ownership just after the date of the raffle even though it's still the same bloke running it.

They have not seen a penny of my money from that day to this.

I have tried to discuss this with Harlequin but he will not discuss the issues raised but he only blames others for causing "trouble".

My experience of a dynamic IP provider matches that described above, I have to say. You'll have to disconnect and reconnect many many times before you're reassigned a new IP, if using megaupload's free service for legal multipart downloads, ahem hem.
