Binaural recordings. If you search around a little on the audiophile scene, you'll find that this has been around for ages.
It's just recorded with a mic that replicates how a human would perceive the sound. Of course, to fully enjoy a binaural recording, one must have excellent audio gear...
Try listening to a binaural recording through a set of AKG K701's(or, insert high-end headphone here) with some proper amping and a good DAC, and you'll notice an even bigger world of difference.
