Honestly, I think the last movie I saw in theaters was Inception.
I watched The Odd Couple last night, and am planning to watch A Band Called Death in a little while.

On Friday I went with a couple of friends to a matinee showing of _Saving Mr. Banks_. Very good movie. I foresee Oscar buzz starting already (Emma Thompson, of course; Tom Hanks, maybe; the screenplay, probably; and if Paul Giamatti gets snubbed by the Academy for Best Supporting Actor it will be a crime of EPIC proportions -- although I suspect they'll be looking at Colin Farrell, who is also very good).
I'll admit though, that I got the feeling of gaps in the backstory (such as how PL Travers went from being a child in Australia to best selling children's book author) so I Googled her last night. Suffice it to say (without, hopefully having to add a spoiler alert), this movie, is, shall we say "the Disney version". Because she was apparently, one seriously screwed-up person in real life.... Think "Auntie Mame's" evil twin, if you're at all familiar with the books or movies (BTW -- Mame Dennis was a real person, and I think my sister-in-law's husband maybe met her once, right before she died, through the NY Theosophical Society; I don't know how much Patrick Dennis made up in the books and how much was real).
As for this movie, you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be earworming those damned Sherman Brothers songs for days....

Last night, finished off watching the Harry Potter films. Absolutely brilliant!

Theatre: The Hobbit: (Desolation of Smaug)
DVD: The Handmaids Tale
Via cable: The Hunger Games (so we could go and see Catching Fire the following day)
In a theater, I took my daughters to see Frozen last week. At home, Star Wars Episode II just last night. Before that, Star Trek Into Darkness. I'm trying out RedBox streaming and I have been watching Robot and Frank but the service seems to stutter a lot. I have only been able to watch the first 30 minutes.
Fountain Pen Sith Lord | Daakusaido | Everything in one spot
I also wanted to see it, but after reading what "the hated Peter Hitchens" says about it http://www.dailymail.co.uk/columnist...enas-nuns.html now I'm not so sure I want to pay to see it.
Because my last DVD was "From Up on Poppy Hill" by Studio Ghibli, which also has something to say about adoption and moral choices in rough (and good) times.

If the Daily Mail says don't watch it, you probably should...
The Day of the Doctor, just tonight. At the theatre, Blue Jasmine. My brother and cousin went off and watched hobbit 2 without me, and I now have no one to watch it with...
"What are moon-letters?" asked the hobbit full of excitement. He loved maps, as I have told you before; and he also loved runes and letters, and cunning handwriting, though when he wrote himself it was a bit thin and spidery.

Got the netflix dvd Saturday, so I had it all weekend. On my second viewing, I realized it ended where it began. You don't readily see this, but you hear it. Two thumbs up.
The Criterion Collection dvd supplements were fascinating, which included a fairly long interveiw tih Robert Bresson.

Last night's DVD...Fast and Furious 6. Enjoyed it.

I enjoyed 'From Up on Poppy Hill'.
The Peter Hitchens article is not really about the film Philomena at all IMO, and whether or not he's got a point I don't think it will affect how you may like the film. Frankly, his article presented very few facts and is a bit all over the place, whereas the film is weaved much more masterfully and based on real events. Don't miss it (in cinema or on DVD).

Watched The Hobbit 2 today. I quite liked it, but not as much as the first installment. Then again, the middle one in a Trilogy is harder to pull off. (Poor Gandalf...and I totally didn't see that romance coming. )

Computer Chess (2013). Surprisingly strange, funny, odd, weird, authentic period piece film.
