What was the last movie you saw? At the theater, dvd, tv (there is TCM), over the shoulder of the person next to you on the plane.

I'm guessing these will be extreme outliers, but here goes.

Last two movies seen via DVD: Devils on the Doorstep (Guizi laile 鬼子来了), dir. JIANG Wen 姜文. And Ang Lee's Lust, Caution. Assigned both for my seminar on WW2 in China, so had to refresh my memory in order to lead discussion.

Can't remember the last movie I saw in the theater. Oh, wait, yes it was a six-hour documentary, Karamay (克拉玛依), by XU Xin, in March. Took a group of students to that. Not many had the stamina, but it was brilliant.

Saw The Hobbitesolation of Smaug last weekend in the theater (we see something almost every weekend), looking at maybe seeing either The Secret Life of Walter Mitty or Saving Mr. Banks this weekend. I also want to see Grudge Match with Stallone and DeNiro.

TV: right now - Ocean's Eleven; earlier today - Angels and Demons and The DaVinci Code

Saw The Wolf of Wall Street. I heard it was long, but I didn't notice. Laughed so hard I'm sure I was worst than a cell phone ringing, but wth - it... is... funny. This just replaced Philomena as my #1 film of the year that I've seen on the big screen.

Right now I'm watching my netflix dvd queue Au Hasard Balthazar (1966), french film directed by Robert Bresson about a donkey. Criterion Collection disc.

What an amazingly wonderful film - as are most Bresson films.

Theatre: watched Philomena two days ago and loved it. Next: The Hobbit 2!!! I'm sure I'll watch it on the big screen twice - once in 3D and once in 2D, as I did with the first installment.

DVD: The Departed. I loved the original Hong Kong version (Infernal Affairs), which is why I put off the remake by Scorsese for so long. I'd still rate Infernal Affairs higher - I find myself care about the characters more than those in The Departed.

Theater: either "Captain Phillips" or "The Grandmaster". I can't remember which, because I saw both within the same time period. Both were excellent.

DVD/Netflix/whateva: I just re-watched "Helvetica" last night for perhaps the 7th time. I really enjoy documentaries, and I especially enjoy that particular one.

My top favorites for 2013 would be "World War Z", "Life of Pi" and "The Grandmaster".
    Beware of oblique conclusions.
