Autumn in Venice: Ernest Hemingway and His Last Muse, by Andrea di Robilant.

This story of Hemingway's love for a young Venetian lady he met in 1948 includes some great stories about living life to the fullest, and a couple of mentions of fountain pens and handwriting.

    Highly recommend.

Chung Kuo: The Middle Kingdom: Book 1 (of 8) by David Wingrove. I enjoyed it enough to purchase Book 2 before finishing Book 1. World building on the scope of the Dune or Foundation series, I'm curious to see if he can keep it going for 8 volumes. So far, I'm riveted.

Casually browsing the local stationery store the other day, check out what I found at an absurd price for a hardcover as well; something like 15 EUR.

From the Public Domain: The King's Achievement by Msgr. Robert Hugh Benson. Especially poignant for a fourth generation Catholic girl like meself.

I just finished Haruki Murakami's 1Q84. Took me two whole weeks of binge-reading.

    I recently finished two:

*A Handful of Hard Men* by Hannes Wessels - fascinating first-hand account of the Rhodesian special forces during the bush war of 1964 -79.

*See You Again in Pyongyang* by Travis Jeppesen - quite a good read of life in current day North Korea.

Just finished Northland, a 4,000-Mile Journey Along America's Forgotten Border, by Porter Fox. I've always liked travelogues, whether contemporary or from the age of sailing ships. Northland is a mix of history about the US/Canadian border with exploring the wilderness and culture along its length.

I'm 2/3 of the way through Eric Idle's biography, Always Look on the Bright Side, which drowns in his tedious litany of name dropping. Idle even admits that in Chapter 20, followed by worse. Perhaps I shouldn't judge until I finish the book, since I am a Python fan that understands certain humor may not be evident...until the end.

I remember reading the first three or so volumes when they first came out - I was wondering the other day about finishing the series.

If you've not read it then I'd recommend Bruce Sterling's Schismatrix if you life SF from that period.

The latest instalment in the Ben Aaronovitch "Rivers of London" series, Lies Sleeping. Police procedural crossed with urban fantasy. Pure escapism...

I just read that, too (Lies Sleeping by Ben Aaronovitch). I love these! So much fun. Do you read the graphic novels, too?

I also read The White Darkness by David Grann, lest folks think that all I read are mysteries. So good and so tragic.

I'm afraid that graphic novels don't really appeal to me - they are not a literary or art form I've ever wanted to "get into"... which is a bit sad in this context as the Rivers of London ones fill in more pieces of the puzzle. Maybe I need to give them a try?
