Patti Smith, _Year of the Monkey_.
Like her other books, it centers around memory and loss. She acknowledges the losses but stills remains positive, like a sunny WG Sebald.

I'm still slowly slogging my way through A Demon Haunted World by Sagan.
I have like 10 other books in the queue to get to after that. Maybe time for less TV and more reading

The Devil, a new biography. It is more of a scholarly work than I thought but a very interesting read.
Just finished Hiroshima Diary by Dr. Hachiya. It answered so many questions I’ve had since visiting the city in the ‘80’s. The writer managed to be objective and personal at the same time while describing his experience as both patient and physician for the weeks immediately following the bombing.
Thanks to Robert here for pointing out this unforgettable read!

Probably only of interest to some Catholics, I just finished The Secret of Benedict-XVI by Antonio Socci. Despite (or because of) the current Calamitous Papacy, I found this to be comforting to hear what the Pope Emeritus is up to these days. This makes sense of parts of the mystery we’ve endured since the abdication.

Just started Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life by Wm. Finnegan; going to see if it merits its 2016 Pulitzer for autobiography...
"Nolo esse salus sine vobis ...” —St. Augustine
Finished Winter by Ali Smith. I didn't like it as much as Autumn, but still worth reading. I'm also reading Susan Orlean's The Library Book.

Just finished In This House of Brede by Rumer Madden. Middle aged top executive woman joins traditional contemplative monastery. Interesting character sketches and insights into a circa-Vll Council group of Benedictines in transition.
I then watched the movie but found it wooden and narrow compared to the book.

Around the World in 80 Trees by Jonathan Drori. Informative and entertaining.
Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz. Why this was a Sunday Times best seller I wiil never know. An ill-written disappointment.

Take another piece of my heart This is Richard Goldstein's memoir set in the 1960s and early 1970s. I started reading it because it has a chapter called "I was a teenage Marcel Proust" -- which turns out to be a mean-spirited quip from Susan Sontag -- and ended up reading the whole thing. Goldstein does an excellent job connecting the personal and political through the structure of his book and develops an effective critique of the counterculture along the way. I liked this one more than i thought i would.

*Annibale Bugnini: Reformer of the Liturgy* by Yves Chiron (transl. by John Pepino). Interesting account of the life and work of the Vincentian priest (later archbishop) who was a key player in post-Vatican II reforms. The author does get deep into the weeds at times, but the book is worthwhile for anyone interested in the subject matter.
