Default Carpal Tunnel surgery--anyone had it?

Long story short, I'm having it done on both hands in a few weeks. Any words of wisdom?

I'm going to stockpile heavy stuff now, and I have lots of books to read. Doc says hand numbness usually lasts 2-4 weeks but the pain should go away almost immediately.

Oh dear. That sounds challenging. I'm sure the surgery will make things better, but I wish you the best of luck with a quick recovery.

I haven't but a friend of mine had this surgery about 3 years ago, although each hand was done separately several months apart. He made a full recovery, no pain, increased movement, resounding success. Good luck!

My better half had it done, both hands. It worked, he is much better now. Follow Drs orders and do not over do until he says it is ok.

Only advice... Watch out on alcohol use. For some reason it effects healing and causes scaring.

I had both hands done - about a year apart - a long time ago; at the time I was a professional musician so it was very important, and the condition really crippling. After the operations which I had done under a general anaesthetic, there was ain and discomfort for a some days, but since I have had no recurrence. A great success and highly recommended.

Yes, both hands at once. My symptoms painfully & acutely started in the right (dominant) hand, which I injured in 1996. Went for a bunch of tests, and found my nerve conduction in both hands is "moderately severe," and my LEFT is actually worse than my right. Looking back, I've had symptoms for over a year but attributed it to the previous injury. Doc gave me the option of one at a time or both at once. Since I will be off work about 6 weeks (My job, I won't be able to function with one hand at all), I decided to just do both.

Asked one of my friends today if he would go dog food shopping with me & he said yes. That was a relief. I went today & bought some but know I will need more. I have 2 110lb dogs.

If you have a significant nerve conduction deficit then you really do need surgery. On this side of the pond it would be unusual to do both sides at once but chat to your surgeon about whether you could have them done sequentially. Recovery is generally straightforward but if the problem is longstanding recovery may be less than 100%

Good luck and I hope you have a good recovery

I have it done on my non dominant hand my right. Not to dissuade you in your decision, I wish I had not had it done, I have very slight improvement. They want to do my dominat my left and I have refused.
Prayers for a great surgery and a fast healing.

Just curious--why do you wish you hadn't done it?

Just an update--Surgery went well on Friday. They did it endoscopically--just an incision in the wrist and sliced everything else inside with a razor-loaded camera. I stayed home Saturday & used jar openers to open the doors in my house with initially. Abandoned that after a few times because the twisting motion really hurt, and just left all the doors ajar. I picked up a pen on the first day and wrote with wobbly handwriting. Took the bandages off this morning, a bunch of bruising but nothing scary looking. Swelling is mostly gone. Twisting motions still painful.

I can't pick up anything heavier than ONE pound. Everytime someone comes over, I ask them to fill up the dog's water dishes. You can see where my priorities are!

Glad to hear you are on the mend. I hope you continue to feel better.

Have you tried using a liquid measuring cup to refill the dog's water? If you can find a plastic one (mine is made by Oxo), it's even lighter.

Just reading this is making my shoulders hurt. I've had two on my right shoulder. I'm having surgery on the left shoulder on the 24th.

I haven't had Carpal Tunnel surgery, but I can share my experience with spine surgery in Dallas. Choosing the right surgeon is crucial for a successful outcome. I recommend reading an article https://www.dallasnews.com/sponsored...ned-providers/ on how to choose spine surgeons. Look for board-certified professionals with expertise in your specific condition. Consider their experience, patient reviews, and success rates. Don't hesitate to get a second opinion. Good luck with your decision and recovery.
