What Was the Last Book You Read?

Have you read The Sparrow,by Mary Doria Russell. As imaginatively wild as Jemisin's book, but better (in my estimation). Not for the faint of heart, though (quite brutal at times).

Oh yes. I would put The Sparrow on my list of “All Time Personal Favorite Reads” (right up there with Miller’s A Canticle for Leibowitz) and have never met anyone else who’s read it. Jemisin is no where close in my humble opinion.

So I assume that you read the sequel, "Children of God"? I was speechless when I finished each of them. Hard to talk about, really. I teach literature, but some books effect me so profoundly that I can barely talk about them. These two are in that category.

I've read The Sparrow and its sequel. Loved them both. They have certainly stuck with me.

You might consider also reading Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon if you haven't. Lovely and optimistic.

"The Crucible" By Arthur Miller. The play describes a partially fictional version of the Salem witch trials during 1692-1693, however, it was also written as an allegory for the practice of making accusations of treason or subversion without proper supporting evidence. Such methods were frequently employed by the US government during the Cold War, especially by the infamous Committee on Un-American Activities, when they accused people of being communists and persecuted them.

Discovered Tana French’s series The Dublin Murder Squad and am hooked on the second book The Likeness. One of the most unusual premises for a crime novel I’ve ever seen.

In The Woods and The Likeness have been recent drama series on BBC TV that we both enjoyed watching.

Wuthering Heights.

I wanted something to read in the garden and just took a small and cheap edition from my office thinking that I would only read 10 pages and then put it back. Loved the book as much for the complex use of mid Victorian English as the storyline.

Embarassed to say that I havent read the book in 50 years.

A great book. My favourite of all time. You can read it simply as a story or you can note the complexity of the symbolism and references from part of the book to another. Such a pity Emily died so young and wrote so little.

I've just finished all three of The Lord of the Rings books. Next I'll read The Hobbit and I know it's out of order but I didn't have that book when I started The Fellowship of the Ring.

The writing style is a little different in The Hobbit, written with children in mind more than The Lord of the Rings. A great yarn. I'm sure you will enjoy it.
