Default FP Geeks and Pen Nerds, What's the Difference?

This might be a very short conversation, or it might generate profound discussion, who knows? I don't know.

Pen geeks and (or?) pen nerds.

    How is each defined?

Are there differences? If so, what are they?

    Anyone? Anyone?

I'll have to search for it but I am pretty sure we had this discussion. The consensus was that we are not socially inept and thus not nerds.

Was that widely not socially inept or only amongst other pen nerds? Did I participate in that thread? Do geeks have congenital, ah, conditions that set them apart? Or am I thinking of freaks? Why won't this dog get off my lap so I can type?

    I have many questions.

I searched and could not find the thread. I think it was before your time here with us.

Here is the wikipedia (yeah I know but for our purposes...) definition of nerd vs. geek

Nerd: A nerd (adjective: nerdy) is a person, typically described as being overly intellectual, obsessive, or socially impaired.

Geek: The word geek is a slang term originally used to describe eccentric or non-mainstream people, with different connotations ranging from "an expert or enthusiast" to "a person heavily interested in a hobby"

    From Google: "define: geek"

    geek
    gēk/Submit
    noun informal
    1. an unfashionable or socially inept person.
    2. a carnival performer who performs wild or disgusting acts.

    Hmm, the confusion thickens.

I will note that at one Pen Posse, a Montblanc Meisterstuck was stuck into a roasted duck's beak. (Look away, children!)

Reminds me of Sbrebrown's story of a man who stuck his hand down a pelikan's bill, just to see what it was like. Apparently, it was quite pleasant.

In the footer of our main site we define geek thusly:

    geek (gēk) pl. geeks (gēks)
    n. An attractive, socially adept and very charismatic person who enjoys an obsession or two.

I suspect both are the same, it's the person doing the name calling that's different.

Paul who is now far to old to called either

    Definition from Dictionary.com:

    Geek [geek] Slang

    noun
    1. a digital-technology expert or enthusiast (a term of pride as self-reference, but often used disparagingly by others).
    2. a person who has excessive enthusiasm for and some expertise about a specialized subject or activity: a foreign-film geek.
    3. a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, especially one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.
    4. a carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.

    verb (used without object)
    5. to be overexcited about a specialized subject or activity, or to talk about it with excessive enthusiasm (usually followed by out ): I could geek out about sci-fi for hours.
Of course, one only needs to refer to a dictionary when the definition of a word was not readily provided. Dan's definition applies directly to the word 'geek' in the context of the term 'FPGeeks'. It is therefore the most correct and authoritative definition for the word when it's used in this forum.

    nerd
    nərd/Submit
    noun informal
    1. a foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious.

I suppose I like saying "pen nerd," cos if I say it very fast, it's pennerd.

    Penerd!

    I know. Doesn't make sense.

All I know is that pen geeks and pen nerds certainly know how to socialize with each other. Civilians' eyes glaze over, poor things.

Do you get the sense that the pen world is growing? Seems that most of my friends are penerds.

(Laughing, cos I did a quick check with Google on "penerd" to make sure there wasn't an existing, unflattering definition.)

This thread is bordering on the overly intellectual and obsessive; thus we are currently leaning toward penerdery. However, if some of us perform some wild carnival acts, we will swing the pendulum back toward pengeekery. I'm going to go practice fire-eating and vicious-lion-taming. Also, I do have a mermaid living in my bathtub.

A geek is a FP hack. A nerd is a guy with a pocket protector and a cell phone duck taped to his belt. NOT that there's anything wrong with that.
