    Smile February means Purple, no?

It is universally and immemorially recognized that the February stone is
    Amethyst
and the relevant color range for the month is, therefore, purple.

Well, who am I to blow against the wind?

Purple it is, then. But for those of us with a Y chromosome and cis-gendered inclinations,
it seems a bit difficult to find purple items that are manly -- purple pens that lean
away from the pink end of the purple range, and towards the blue end of the range. Is what I mean.

What would you consider possibilities for a masculine purple pen?

While I'm on the topic, I searched the forum for anything having to do with
    Porphyry,
which as you know is the purple granite quarried originally in Egypt and shipped all over the classical world
for use in royal/state/religious statuary, furniture, and ritual implements.
If there was a pen that made use of porphyry, I'd be all over it like white on soy milk.
But I don't see any search results for pen-related porphyry. How can that be?
You can't spit in a Roman or Vatican museum without hitting a purply granite bowl or ewer or throne.
    ditto certain east asian dynasties.

If you can make pens out of all sorts of rocks and stones and lava, why hasn't porphyry had its turn?

The Lamy Purple AL-Star seems pretty gender-neutral as far as purple pens go.

For ink, how about some outrageous Noodler Cactus Fruit (we call those "tunas" this far south)?

I haven't ever seen a purple pen that I was all that chuffed about.

Now purple inks, that's a different story altogether. I've got three that I really like, but several more on my to-try list. I love DA Aubergine, Noodler's Violet (which does lean toward the blue end of the spectrum), and PR Ebony Purple. All great purple inks.

In fact, I just inked up a pen with Noodler's Violet today.

I have an Edison Pearlette made in purple web celluloid and it is a striking color.

For inks, I prefer blue purples. Diamine Bilberry or Sailor Ultramarine.

I have absolutely no idea what half of the original post means, nor that February was Purple Month. All the time is purple/violet time for me. For all personal stuff I use Gamma Violet, Simplisties Violet, Pelikan Violet, and other fun inks like BSCG. My tuxedo is lined with amethyst violet silk lining. I have bow ties, cummerbunds and shirts in those shades. All I know is that I favour purples and violets and have no problem finding things in those colours.

Diamine Billberry is very purple/blue. I adore it, very dark, very rich, not at all 'girly.'

There is the Hero Lamy safari knock off you can get in purple. As for inks I like Diamine majestic purple, don't think purple is feminine in any way really

I agree with Lady Onogaro about Private Reserve Plum, but also really love J. Herbin Violet Pensée.

It isn't really porphyry, but this Edison Pearlette the Goulet's have reminds me of porphyry.

Nice to hear Diamine Bilberry mentioned - I have used this at work a couple of times and I like it a lot. I like Violette Pensee but it needs to be really wet to give the colour that I like.

I have noticed a lot of people talk of true purple and refer to inks that are very much a magenta colour, to my mind this is too close to pink. eg Diamine Majestic Purple. Are purple lovers in two camps - Magenta vs Violet???

I have a sample of Rohrer & Klingner Cassia which I like a lot so far.

Noodler's North African Violet is a great colour but this ink lingers - I don't know if I would say it stains but it took a while to get it off my glass pen - yet to try it in an FP.

I honestly had no idea what porphyry was, until I saw some pictures (thank you google). And thank you Avi, for teaching me something new.

There's more to porphyry than what you can obviously find on a web search -- consider, por ejemplo, that Rome's influence in Spain continued well into the middle ages -- you can find porphyry baptismal fonts and holy water vessels in the major and minor churches of Andalucia and Castile, and this extended into the Spanish colonies. The great mansions of Buenos Aires and other south American capitals have porphyry items in their collections. It's not just for Rome!
