It does look retro, doesn't it? That's the nature of the Glenmont, I think. Brian did a great job on this one!

Black acrylic on the end pieces, and Sheaffer amber glow for the body.

The material doesn't go that far back, only from about 1998-2003 when Sheaffer made the Balance II.

    Here's four of the materials:

Ho-ho well that's the last time I make a guess about materials.

Do you know what the stuff actually is - chemically or physically I mean?

Sorry I neglected to say: It's acrylic, or compressed acrylic to be more precise. Lots of depth in person!
Cob, Brian refers to this old Sheaffer stock as Cebloplast in this thread about his Menlo. A lot of pen turners say the material's a bear to turn. Hope that answers your question.

P.S. @trhall's Beaumont in Sheaffer Tiger Eye also dates back to the Balance II. He posted photos of his pen in this very Edison thread-here's a quick link to it.

Stunning, as always, with your choices. Are you familiar with
Levenger's Kyoto material? Just from your photo, the two materials look similar. The Kyoto has a touch of lavender and turquoise, though. I would love a custom pen in a similar material...

After you've gotten to know each other, please let us know how this one feels in comparison to your Huron.

Yes, that's a gorgeous material in the Kyoto. But as you wrote, ultimately different, as is the Levenger Golden Tortoise.

I just love me some brown pens.

    Hmmm

I may be entering dangerous territory. Just sent Brian a test balloon on the subject of a Huron. Flecked tortoise bulb filler and black/black-grey ebonite cap, blind cap and section. With a tortoise lucite ink window, for the transparency. Definitely not even close to making a final decision on it though.

    Any thoughts, suggestions?
"What are moon-letters?" asked the hobbit full of excitement. He loved maps, as I have told you before; and he also loved runes and letters, and cunning handwriting, though when he wrote himself it was a bit thin and spidery.

    Default My Edison Family

Have Brian take pics of the samples together. He was welling to take that step so I could see the colors together. That will help you seal the deal. I think a personalized pen...is a personal decision. See how the look could come together and if it calls to you. Sounds cool to me, but I'm not footing the bill

I don't prefer to mix materials. The different feel on the same pen bothers me. But YMMV

It definitely sounds like it has possibilities. How big of an ink window?

Brian has great taste and design sense and will be able to steer you the right way for what YOU like, which is great.

I do think that tortoise material may have enough translucency that you may not need an ink window but Brian would let you know that for sure.

I used to be an "all one material" guy but the Beaumont changed my mind. Love having darker / black blind caps and sections. The contrast really makes the main material "pop".

Good luck on whatever you choose, and please do share once you get your pen!

Added to say: yes, it's a slippery slope. Welcome aboard to the Edison train! It's a great ride.

Both of those materials are very handsome. Having seen both the flecked tortoise and the tortoise lucite in person... my thought would be "that's a very busy looking pen." And maybe you'll like that. It's your aesthetic that counts. The tortoise lucite as you know, has a lot of swirl in it.

I can't remember if the flecked tortoise itself has some transparency, because the version I saw had a plunger filler... can't remember. But Brian will be able to advise you about that. It is a very rich looking material in person.

Thomas (trhall) is right that Brian's aesthetic is pretty darn good. Although even then, some things I like he won't, and vice versa. So you gotta ultimately go with what you really want.

Black acrylic or black ebonite ends sounds great! (oops: Brian does still use Black ebonite!) There's an example on Brian's smugmug that has flecked tortoise with the black, and i really like it. It's really nice, I think. Here it is:

P.P.S. My photo of my Glenmont doesn't show the transparency of the amber glow material. It's so beautifully transparent that I may NOT ever ED that pen! (But "ever" and "never" are big words that bite me in the butt.)

The thing, too with the tortoise lucite, every pen will come out different: (Well, so will every flecked tortoise be different!)

For me the black section is a must, I like how it cleans up the look.

The "busy" look was my main worry, my choice of the lucite for the ink window is to have something similar to the main body but more see-through.

Totally get that! Brian can help with that notion. He'll tell you what he thinks about the lucite with that combo.

When all is said and done, and you've worked out the details: I think your Huron will be a standout!

P.S. Although when you think about it, since you're using the pen as a bulb-filler: the ink window's "color" is going to change when you ink the pen up. A clear ink window might be really nice. And will say from experience, that the tort lucite's swirls will be less evident, although not totally disappear, when you ink it. Again, do what your own instincts call out for after all the advice is weighed. It is uninked that the lucite seems out of place in my own mind w/the flecked tortoise. do keep us posted!

P.S.S. Here's what I mean about the swirls and the inked up look (again, each pen will be different, this is only my version):

I know. I inked up my Beaumont just to remind myself how good of a pen it is while we wait for the announcement.

What are some good Edison models for those of us who like the Beaumont? I have kid-sized hands (well, men's S/size 7 gloves) and like the balance and weight of the Beaumont, but wouldn't mind reaching out for another pen. I was thinking of the standard Mina.

If you like the Beaumont and have smaller hands, look at the Encore.

Here it is in relation to an Edison Morgan and a Namiki Falcon. The Encore is in the middle. It is light and well balanced both posted and unposted. In the first post in this thread, there are more pictures for comparison.

I have the 2012 and 2013 LEA pens and love them very much. I did a video / written review of both on my blog at www.mycoffeepot.org to keep us busy while we wait for this year's pen. I might try the ebonite this year. Very exciting. :-)
