Default And now the wait begins...

I picked up a pair of Vanishing Point pens this week, and I just sent them off to Tim Girdler this morning to be ground and tuned. One is a fine nib; it is just getting tuned and smoothed to match my other Pilot fine point nibs. The other is a broad nib; it is getting ground to be a cursive italic...0.6mm or so. This is the first time I've had my pens worked on by a nibmeister, and I'm so excited I can hardly stand it...this is worse than waiting for Christmas!

Doubtless, it will be worth the wait. I had two of mine reground by Pendleton Brown. I love them.

Hi mtnbiker62 just curious, did you try the nibs before sending them off for nibmeistering ?

Sort of...I got the two pens as a package deal, so I couldn't pass them up, but I knew from my experience with Pilot pens that the broad was going to be too wide for my tastes. I've wanted to try a really good cursive italic nib for quite a while, and this pen looked like a good candidate for that, so that one was headed to the nibmeister from the start. The other pen I tried, and it was a little scratchy, but not unusably so. But since I was sending the other one off, and it was only a few dollars to have it tuned, it went off as well.

I have never regretted getting a ground nib. You'll love them. Now if I can only make to a pen show to see it done in person.

Basically, you'd be watching a person with a Dremel wearing interesting goggles. What is kind of cool is if you are sitting there, he or she might ask to watch you write (to insure the point you are asking for is the point you want), then s/he grinds, passes it back to you for more writing, and then s/he polishes it up and passes it back to you for more writing, and if all is good, s/he watches you smile and say "oooh!" (This is, I admit, pretty cool.)

Ahhhh the anticipation and wait of a custom ground nib.

We all feel your pain but we also know the joy you will experience when they arrive back.

I find working with small explosive devices and researching 7th Century antecedents to hip-hop help me relax while waiting for nib work. Try it.

And it is even more fun when you can grind your own nibs. Not that hard to learn. Low cost Chinese pens make for great practice.

I worked in the defense industry for many years, so I am well acquainted with the calming properties of high explosives.
