plain pencil: Faber Castell 9000 Jumbo 2B

    all-graphite: Lyra Titan 307 2B/HB

    specialty: Lyra Rembrandt Carbon 308/3

    mechanical: Lamy 2000M

    vintage: Faber-Castell 'Faber 6' 7457 Steno 3B

If I had to choose just one pencil (or a box full of them) it would probably be the Lyra Rembrandt Carbon 308/3 (I do have a box of vintage Faber 6, though )

I don't have as many pencils as fountain pens, at least not ones that I use semi-regularly, but my favorite is probably the Kuru Toga. I really like the automatic lead rotation that helps keep the lead at a sharp point. I have two of the basic models from starter sets, and recently bought a black Roulette model for something a bit nicer.

I've been using a Field Notes pencil lately. They make various eco-friendly claims right on the pencil shaft, including that they are lacquer-free. The result is a unique tactile experience: a bit grainy, but kind of slick, too. And they are really light weight. What is amazing, though, is that the No.2 lead just goes on forever. I can't remember when I last sharpened mine, but I've written with it a ton and the lead is still fairly sharp.

I have a pair of Papermate Clear Point Elites in 0.7mm, one with Pentel Hi-Polymer 3H and the other with 2B, and a 0.5mm Clear Point with the stock HB. Very budget, but with nice features, like a retracting lead guide, a full-size eraser, and a reasonably decent grip. Might have to upgrade, though, as I peruse the earlier posted options.

My favourite mechanical pencil is the Pentel Graph 1000 but I have to admit the Pentel GraphGear 1000 beats it, technically: better clip, retractible tip, all else being more or less equal. I just enjoy using the Graph more than the GraphGear.

My favourite wooden pencil is the Tombow Mono 100, I used that all the time for drawing. For writing with, my favourite's the Tombow 2558. Tombow and Mitsu-Bishi both make a lot of fantastic wooden pencils.

My favorite is this rather hard to find MP sold in the JDM only:

But it's not quite fair to say it's a favorite since I don't use it (it's a bit pricey, so it's more of a collectible).

For a user pencil, my favorite is the Rotring 800 (for it's stunning looks and able performance).

I love the rotring 600, but tend to reach more for the pilot s20 for drawing. And a staedtler 925.

A cheap old rotring visu for office use (just insanely useful for any style) or the pentel p205, which is possibly the only classic mech pencil in the world of office stationery. I also have a soft spot for zebras, if I come across them.

^ That's a beauty. Is it a lead holder of some kind? Is there a lead propelling mechanism? Show us an owner photo!

I think what drew me to mechanical pencils is their understated appearance. Much more technical inside than is suggested from the outside, even more than a cartridge filled fountain pen. As long as there is the technology to manufacture leads, there will always be a means to write with them. Much easier than forging a ballpoint tip.

I've never been much a wooden pencil user. However, of late I've been using various Mitsubishi 9000s quite a lot (almost as much as fountain pens). I can't speak to the quality of their offerings on the far ends of the lead grade scale, but the ones I've used from 2H to 2B have been perfect. I can't imagine a better general writing/everyday use wooden pencil. Love the dark-ish green color as well.

The Pentel Twist Erase III. Most of it is very durable (the clip is breakable, although I think that only happens because I fidget wuth it), and the grip is great, which is important given that pencils require some pressure. It has an incredible amount of eraser, which is essential for me, and clicking for more lead is very smooth and requires no thought. I like it mostly for drawing and working through math problems, as I must do anything that requires legibility in pen (no joke, multiple teachers have banned me from writing anything they need to read in pencil. Including math profs).

I like my Pentel Kerry in Olive Green and the Rotring 800 in black (both 5mm). The Kerry comes with me everywhere and resides in my pant pocket while the Rotring 800 tends to stay on my desk.

I recently picked up a Uni Kuru Toga with retractable tip. WOW. This is one amazing design! I'm curious to see how well it holds up over time.

Mine have held up well. They seem to do better with printing rather than cursive writing. I believe lifting the pencil tip off the page is what activates the KT engine.

I bought one of the original plastic Kuru togas a few years ago. I didn't really like the lead spinning mechanism as I felt it made the pencil feel imprecise. To me the mechanism would be far more useful on a thicker lead pencils e.g. 0.9 or on a clutch pencil as the line variation on a 0.5mm lead isn't that significant.

I havent tried a ton of pencils but so far hands down would be a vintage rOtring 600 with the "aggressive" knurling.

I have had this one for several months now! My apologies if this is redundant, but it is really superb Geeks!

All of my questions have been answered and this is a unique writing instrument.... especially when we consider it is a pencil. Just lovely!

Yes it is worth the price and very satisfying to write with. Just astonishing as only Faber Castell knows how to invent!

I went to engineering school and I had to carry a full set of pencils, Staedtler Noris used to be my favorite in school times grade F or B

Now, I just uyse pencils for the pleasure of them, and I prefer Faber Castell 9000 grade F

Mechanical pencils, nothing beats a good Staedtler for me, I sitll have my 30+ yr old one and enjoy using it.
