“The pen is the tongue of the mind.”
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra.
It's a tough question, since there are several pencils that I really like. I suppose it is the Eberhard Faber Mongol 482 No. 1 at the moment.
Ticonderoga Black. Plain and simple.

Must concur with the Pilot S-20. The reddish brown wood is nice. Second favorite is the Tombow Zoom. After that, it gets muddy.
plain pencil: Faber Castell 9000 Jumbo 2B
all-graphite: Lyra Titan 307 2B/HB
specialty: Lyra Rembrandt Carbon 308/3
mechanical: Lamy 2000M
vintage: Faber-Castell 'Faber 6' 7457 Steno 3B
If I had to choose just one pencil (or a box full of them) it would probably be the Lyra Rembrandt Carbon 308/3 (I do have a box of vintage Faber 6, though )
My favourite mechanical pencil is the Pentel Graph 1000 but I have to admit the Pentel GraphGear 1000 beats it, technically: better clip, retractible tip, all else being more or less equal. I just enjoy using the Graph more than the GraphGear.
My favourite wooden pencil is the Tombow Mono 100, I used that all the time for drawing. For writing with, my favourite's the Tombow 2558. Tombow and Mitsu-Bishi both make a lot of fantastic wooden pencils.

I havent tried a ton of pencils but so far hands down would be a vintage rOtring 600 with the "aggressive" knurling.
one of this morning charity shop finds was a CROSS pencil - 1/20 - 12 KT g.f. - Made in U.S.A ............ fresh out of lead and the rubber has disappeared - I think someone has poked the front end into something so it may need some tlc. - and you can see what is possibly a roll-stop stuck to the top of the clip.
It says MANITOWOC, which you'll all know is in Wis. - I assume this is simply a private personalized addition to this pencil rather than having been sold as such - I could be wrong, but not sure. Any thoughts welcome - presume this is a fairly recent model, and it looks as though CROSS are made in both Ireland and the States, which I didn't know.
Anyone know if it's possible to remove the front cone in case I need to clean the thing through, or is that a professional job?

I like wooden pencils. You can't chew on mechanical pencils, plus they don't smell. I love the smell of a freshly sharpened pencil I have here a wooden pencil from 6th grade. I still use it, so it's not like it's some treasured artefact, it's just wearing down veeeery slowly. The eraser has been chewed off and almost all the paint is gone. The wood is a grubby shade of grey. When I sharpen it the cone of clean, bright-coloured is almost shocking.
Kuru Toga Roulette , 0.5 mm lead with the Gunmetal body (basically all blank).
With the auto lead rotation I always have a sharp point to write with and the knurling makes for a secure grip. The one downside is the non-retractable lead sleeve.
For right now, it's Palomino Blackwing 602s (the updated version). Biggest problem with them, though, is that I have to sharpen frequently because the lead is so soft. But other than that, they're my favourite.
I'm afraid it is a rather modest Staedtler Tradition 2B (sharpened to taste with a suitable knife)
Close 4-way tie: 1) Parker lucky-lock pencils, 2) Eversharp Skyline pencils, 3) Sheaffer Balance pencils with radius clips (for robustness and looks because the eraser isn't so convenient) and 4) Caran D'Ache Fixpencils
The Lucky Lock Parker is also my favorite pencil, followed closely by the flat top Parker Duofold of the same era. I'm always looking for a different Lucky Lock to add to the stash.
The Duofold uses a push on crown, whereas the Lucky Lock, as you know, is push and twist. The mechanisms are similar but at least slightly different.
chiaroscuro (August 1st, 2014)
My simple Pentel 0.5mm or my Eagle Turquoise lead holders, depending on how I feel.
They do different jobs, so it isn't really like one can replace the other very easily.
