My favorite remains the Ticonderoga No. 2 in yellow. I have vintage pencils as part of fountain pen sets from the early 20th century, but I'm never inclined to use or restore them. On the other hand, those sterling Victorian pencils from the pre-fountain pen era are just glorious.

    My favorites?

    - Eberhard Faber Mongol Number 1, boxes from a stationery store that never threw out old stock.

    - Palomino Blackwing Pearl, a revival of the old E-F Blackwing ("Half the Pressure Twice the Speed"). Palomino offers three sorts -- harder, super-soft, and in-between. The Pearl, for me, is just right. A bit softer than the Mongol #1.

I've used the Pentel P200 series for almost 30 years. I have used other mechanical pencils along the way, but keep defaulting back to the ones I started with all those years ago. I usually have a few traditional wooden pencils kicking around as well.

For the last 15 or so years I've been using 0.5mm Zebra M-301s. I try to keep several around. I think I used the above Pentel model in college. I am a big fan of Pentel Clic Erase erasers and have several scattered about.

This has to be one of the more handsome wood+steel mechanical pencils ever made. Not very familiar with Tombow... but they appear to be a very popular brand in Japan.

The Tombow looks lovely, but that Pilot is something else. Those lines are gorgeous.

Myu, that Tombow is really very elegant. Tombow 2000 is it - or is that the price tag?

The PILOT mechanical pencil above is probably my all time favorite at this point. Whereas so many retractable tip PILOT mechanical pencils use a "double-push" design (long push to lock tip in place, then half-push to expel lead), this one requires a simple twist that extends the tip and the rear plunger. It's a little tricky to do one-handed, but there's the added advantage of no unnecessary lead advancement when retracting. Style wise, it's kind of like a Porsche... whereas the Tombow is more like an old Bentley with wooden dash.

I think I found a pencil even more beautiful than those wood trimmed ones. The Pelikan 550 brown tortoise shell, with rolled gold cap.

Interesting design. It has a nose-forward clutch that protrudes out of the tip. With the clutch that far forward, more of the lead is used up before turning into an unusable stub. It will stay extended until the lead is pushed out of the channel, at which point it will retract about 75%. The rear plug can be pulled out, revealing the lead reservoir. It's very wide, so plenty of lead can be stored. There is an eraser. You unscrew the brass cylinder from the rear plug to access it. Pretty interesting design. The one on this pencil was totally rotted, so I'll have to seek out replacements. They're about twice the size of the small ones you see on modern pencils.

My favorite...wow...they are like kids! Each one is unique in their own way. That being said, I would have to go with my Caran d'Ache Ivanhoe. The overall size and length are great, but it's the weight that makes it my favorite.

I was checking out their pencils on line and saw the mechanical pencil. I will be going to the store today here and see if they have one in stock to check out. Will be looking for some Clairefontaine paper which is the reason to be going there in the first place. I didn't know Clainefontaine owned Rhodia untill looking for their pencils. Ttyl.
0.5mm vs 0.7mm graphite sizes is much like 9mm vs 45acp...they both work if you know what you are doing. - me

Looking for Caran d'Ache Type 55 2mm set and Rotation .7 pencils.

They didn't have the Rhodia pencils in. They had the Clairefontaine paper but not in the heavy weight. Bought 2 Moleskine 110 pound paper weight. Now I did find a Faber Castell 9000 Perfect Pencil which I gifted my last one years ago. Then I couldn't find one to replace it. Forgot how much I liked it. It is really nice.

I've used them. I like them, but I can imagine that someone who doesn't like a triangular grip might not like them. I'm interested in trying the new Blackwings.
