Just arrived. Was supposed to be a gift but when I saw it I totally fell for the obvious gimmickry and loved it.

But I actually don't know how to use pencils -- is there a trick to keeping the lead even?

I like vintage mechanical pencils with .9 mm lead. This pencil & letter opener combo is a current favorite that lives on my desk and is used from both ends.

My black 50s Sheaffer from a Snorkel set. It takes 0.9mm lead which is my preferred diameter and is thin enough to fit the loops on my A5 Filofax (which not that many pens or pencils will). It is also simple and elegant in design with the same cigar shape as the Snorkel FP. This pencil was mint when I bought it but I unfortunately spilled some acetone over it when it was on my workbench so it now has a patchy milky finish. I could have kicked myself. It still works perfectly though.

I like these as well; I have the earlier version with the retractable front portion, and it's my favorite for sketching things I'm making in my shop.

I have one of those as well. It is a very good pencil. However, I would have to say that my favourite is my Montblanc 100 year historical.

Pilot S20 in reddish wood. So well balanced and lovely to hold.

The ones tied to polling booths with bits of string. The most powerful pencils there are.

As you can't take these, I would go for an early Parker 45 flighter.

The Rotring 600 gets my vote as well. I wish I had not sold all those gold plated retractable ones I had. I still have one 600 left and one gold 800. The Rotring 600 and the Pentel P205 and Kerry models are what got me interested in mechanical pencils many years ago.

In more recent times, the harder to find Autopoints get my pulse racing.

And I should not neglect the Kaweco stubby 8X/18X series (seven colors) or the short 267's with their "crack if you stare at them" ill-fitting caps.

It makes me feel ill to consider naming just one favorite.....

I use mine mainly for sketching too, it's such a great pencil.

Me too, there's so much variety. Today I'm wishing I'd put in a word for the Wörther Shorty.

Caran d'Ache Grafwood for sketching and drawing, otherwise Rotring 600 mechanical pencil.

The Uniball Kuru Toga, for the neat-o-matic lead rotating automiser, and insanely accessible price. it's also my Parker 45 GT's favourite, for the exta leads!

I have always had a liking for propelling pencils especially silver ones - and indeed pencils in general.

I have just four at present, and a very nice one arrived today. It was a very reasonable price and I am delighted with it. A turn in Goddard's Silver Dip worked wonders.

The photo (of my usual miserable standard) shows it in company with an English sterling silver Eversharp (also a great bargain) and with its pen-mate - a Wyvern 5. It is a Mabie Todd Fyne Poynt from the New York company.Pencils Sml.jpg
