Purpleheart and Jade 'Bamboo' Style fountain Pen

Some time back, I got a custom order for one of my 'Bamboo' style pens, but with a bit of a twist - the request was that it be made from Purpleheart wood, and that rather than simple recessed ends as I usually do with this style, that the ends be decorated with inlaid green jewels.

I must say that when I got this order, I thought 'no accounting for some people's taste' But, unusual requests are what custom is all about, so away I go.



It seems I was wrong. As I put the combo together, I began to like it more and more, and now that it is done, I am rather taken by it. Of course, maybe that's just all the work that went into it, but still...




The pen is made of purpleheart wood, as noted above, and the end jewel inlays are of Arizona Jade Tru-Stone. The threads are cut into black acrylic inserts in the cap and barrel, and the grip section is also of black acrylic. The finish is done in polished CA.



One of the cool things about purpleheart is that when it is freshly cut or turned, it is a rather boring medium brown. But after exposure, it rapidly (over couple days) turns to a rich purple colour (which eventually turns to a rich dark brown months to years later with UV exposure).
