    Default Sinister Calligraphy

A while back I gave up on flexy nibs on my pens. Now I think that was a mistake.

As a lefty, writing normally (for me) meant a flexy nib wasn't much use as I'm pushing it all the time.

But that's only if I'm following the rules. I don't have to do that.

Dragging my hand through what I write messes things up a lot of the time. I can let it get me down, or I can make it part of my personality on the page.

Calligraphy is typically beautiful, fluid, elegant. It's in the etymology.

It doesn't have to be. When I make a blank page otherwise, it ain't wrong unless I say it is.

Calligraphy can be sinister. I can live with that.

I started to realize this when I made my Edison giveaway submission the other day... an excerpt:

It ain't pretty. That's fine. Why not run with it? At first I described it as deranged, which isn't inaccurate- I think sinister is a more appropriate term though.

I'll put some stuff up as it hits the page. love to have feedback.

    thanks!

    Sinister Calligraphy. I love it.

When I saw the title I assumed there would be some lettering in the style of that used on the covers of Nightmare Before Christmas or the Corpse Bride.

Sinistral calligraphy sounds just as scary too.

It is a very interesting idea not to avoid smearing and smudging when writing left-handed.

I'm really looking forward to see how this develops.

I like the first one a lot - it'd look great on a rough wash on plain paper.

Have you seen any of Ralph Steadman's lettering? His is all scratches, drops and blots, not conventionally pretty, but instantly recognisable and with bags of style.
