Why do I want an Pelikan M800?!?

Help!

I recently hold an Pelikan M800, un-inked, and i love it straight away! The size, weight, color...
I cannot justify the acquisition of an M800 (roughly over £350), as I'm not a writer, or journal-ing, just sketching from time to time...

So, please help take my mind away from it...or maybe I will find one inexpensive/antique shop/charity shop...

Ok, FWIW...

There is the Jinhao 100, which comes in many colors these days. It is very close in size, possibly in weight (my only Pel in that range is a M815 which has metal stripes that may cause it to weigh a bit more than a standard 800). The place where it comes closest is the section, which is virtually identical, but other areas of the pen, such as the clip and finial, are unlike the Pelikan. However, they are under $20, so it may be a very inexpensive way for you to see if the feel "in-hand" is really what you would like, and you can continue to save (and look) for the actual Pelikan 800. I say that because the writing experience of the Jinhao does not compare, and it is a converter/cartridge pen rather than a piston. A cheap trial run, but don't give up on the much better pen.

Pelikans make excellent pens, so wait for a used M800 at a lower price. Perhaps it'll be your motivation to write.

Hold out for the M800. I can write for hours with mine. The 18ct. medium nib is so silky smooth and the pen is so well balanced, either posted or unposted, that you never feel any hand cramp or discomfort. It also looks great. It's the one with the green striped barrel. I got mine lightly used from Italy on eBay for less than $300 Can and it came with a bottle of Edelstein Sapphire ink.

Thank you very much for your replies! I will hold on tightly, sell some Parker 51 and English Maxima Duofold, and will look for an affordable M800.

It's not I cannot buy it, more like why do I want a £350 pen?!? But, it is what it is, and I will get one when the opportunity arise.

Why? Because its a thing of refined beauty, and you are intelligent, discerning, and handsome. Also because it'll last longer than you. A family heirloom. Not forgetting that you really, really like it

As others have said, you should be patient and look around. I have four M800 pens and two of them were real bargains.

If you look around carefully you will find nice M800 pens for a lot less. For example Zona900 has a M800 with a medium PF nib for £280. Letizia Iacopini and Regina Martini also usually have these pens.

So it bears repeating... be patient... look around.

First of all, I too, would love to own an M800 especially the Stresemann model.
The reason I still don't own one today is only the price. I haven't found one for sale within my budget for modern pens (I collect mainly vintage ones).

As far as use-case, I am also not a writer, nor a journalist, but that hasn't stopped me from enjoying cool pens.

Not the same thing. And while adherents may tout phrases like "greatest", that doesn't mean it is a good fit for all hands. I own a number of 51s, but I virtually never use them because of the exceedingly small, tapered section. It is just not a comfortable pen for long writing sessions for me. Just as I acknowledge that the pen holds a very high position in pen history, I don't simply recommend them in a knee-jerk manner. It is not like an M800.

But I do have 4 Parker 51's and some English Duofold Aerometric (Maxima, Senior, Standard), and still want the M800...

In my opinion, the Duofold and Senior Aerometric are better than 51.

Don't look now but there is a very nice M850 (vermeil cap) with a broad nib over at the classifieds... but it is a wee bit over £500....

Have you considered going to a pen show and taking the Parker pens you would be willing to swap towards a Pelikan M800

Or maybe visit pen stores like Dromgooles that have many used pens that might be swappable options. Also check out those pen stores that regularly sell used pens. For example Kirk Speer at Pen Realm had loads of pens for sale after he bought the estate collection of a Texan pen collector who sadly died. I believe many pen stores similarly buy used pens for sale. You would surely manage to get a decent used M800 at a price you can afford. Goos luck with your search.
