Hi all
A quick question I hope
What's the safest way to remove a Parker 51 Jewel from it's brass screw when it has been fixed with Shellac
Heat, solvent or something else.
Thanks for any help with this.

Paul,
As you delve into the fun of working on your own pens, you might consider this wonderful reference. (I am still using the 2nd edition!)

Although I have the book, what I tend to do first is to find out if there are any You Tube videos showing me how to do the job with the hands-on view so to speak.
I found this one for removing a Parker 51 jewel, but if your jewel is shellacked in then you probably need to warm it up in some way before attempting removal. Most repairers will use dry heat, say from a hairdryer, although some might use an Ultrasonic bath. I tend to favour the latter when it's safe, like it is on metal 51 caps.
Then you will need a piece of rubber, or even better, sticky rubber type material, that you can probably buy from various repairers. That gives you the grip to get the jewel out when you know it's not glued in.

Hi all
Thanks for the replies
I did try one of te sticky blocks sold for this job but only managed to unscrew the brass bush the jewel is screwed into, I then tried soaking it in Naphtha (Lighter fluid) again without any joy. Finally I tried dry heat, fortunately I have one of those adjustable heat jobies sold for SMD solder work and that finally did the trick at around 120deg.
I have ordered some Naphtha to try again on another one, just in case lighter fluid has been fiddled with under EU rules and now not as good as it once was.
Thanks
Paul
Why do you want to separate the jewel and bushing?

Ok I'll bite,
Its to either be able to 're tighten the Bush which holds the clip in place or to completely strip a cap for de dinging etc.

I think you and Fred are correct on that one

Nope not going to bite this time as I will be obviously wrong in my reason.

I am Dyslexic think yourself lucky if you can read anything I type, obviously bright is bite
Just found the ideal tool for removing the jewel for whatever reason you want to remove it
Just the right amount of softness and tackiness to do the job. Just tried it on ten jewels and they unscrewed first go with all of them.

Hello,
I have never ventured here on this platform before.
Read with interest all the comments.
Thought it was odd that no one mentioned using the arrow clip to loosen the jewel.
As for Dycem - it is impressive, if you can release 10 jewels using it without pulling the jewel from its thead sat in the brass screw you are very lucky.

I had better buy a lottery ticket then
Paul
Hello Paul,
I would 10 lottery tickets, they will all win, you clearly have the ' midas ' touch.
Please can you tell me of the 10 you that removed how many did you just remove just the jewel.
Of the rest, have you ever separated a jewel from the screw once it was removed.
Any photography, help with understanding your technique would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
nb I am quessing you know someone who lives not far from a pub called the White Hart
Hi
It was about 50/50
Of these the came out still in the brass bushing, a combination of soaking in Naphtha and gentle application of dry heat separated the rest.
Technique is quite simple, put the black puck from the link above on the desk then push the top of the cap into the puck with firm pressure then just give a quick anticlockwise twist, as the puck is quite sticky it hold the Jewell still allowing either it the unscrew from the bush or unscrew it and the bush.
For what it costs I can recommend it to anyone who needs to remove the Jewell for whatever reason, in my case I tend to buy some quite neglected pens so often need to strip the cap for removing dents.
