    Default Making nib holders

I'm thinking of making some nib holders on the lathe and I'm wondering if you can buy the metal bits that go in the ends of the holders to hold the nib.

And, does anyone make nib holders without the metal inserts? If so, how do you make the proper orifice in the end?

Any guidance here would be helpful. Clearly I have never done it before.

    Thanks

The widget you need is called a ferrule. If you are not able to find them I have gotten a plain old piece of metal tube to work too -- you just need to find the size that fits your nibs.

If you have any old fountain pen feeds around you could drill a hole in your dip pen that leaves room for the nib and the feed. The feed would take the place of the ferrule. That's the basic idea behind "dipless dip pens." The fit between the nib and feed needs to be reasonably close. If you get it to work you'll can write much longer between dips.

Thanks jbb- I wondered what 'dipless' was all about. I like that idea. Especially since the postage on 10 dip pen ferrules on Ebay was $30.

BTW - you were right - it arrive crumbled!!

Bummer, my seal crumbed when I sent one to a pen pal in the next town too. Back to the drawing board on that.

It's not hard to get a dip nib to stay in place if the fit is tight enough. This is a re-purpossed ballpoint pen probably sold as a tourist gift in France. It's not hard to fit a nib in to a tubular opening.
