Making the world a more peaceful place, one fine art print and one handwritten letter at a time.

Near the beginning of The Tomorrow War, world leaders in the year 2023 (featuring, for some reason, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Gordon Brown and Theresa May) declare a global military draft to fight an alien invasion in the 2050s. The montage includes stock footage of a pen (maybe a Pilot?) signing something

Screenshots in this post. A Chinese lookalike, possibly Hero 329?
My second clip from a Get Smart episode. I can't binge watch this (or anything), but watch an episode now and then. In the episode Dr. Yes from season 3, Agents 86 and 99 are in a room where the moving walls are about to crush them to death. Luckily, 86 is able to prop them open with his "oversized mini-girder fountain pen". Then 99's mini diamond headed drill gets them out the door again.
If he had called it his "mini-girder ballpoint", it would have been equally fictional, but I wouldn't have included it here. I wonder what the largest actual working fountain pens are.

Did the oversized mini-girder fountain pen come with an architect grind?

I was watching my weekly dose of Walking Dead episodes when I spotted this pen in an ad for the Benicio del Toro film "Nightmare Alley" with Bradley Cooper and the ever lovely Cate Blanchett. The events in the film supposedly take place in the late forties so I believe the pen is not period appropriate, although I could not identify it.

Watched Phenomenon with John Travolta a couple of nights ago. In one scene he moves Doc's (Robert Duval)fountain pen with his mind across the desk. The pen is capped and I couldn't identify the pen, but it was referred to as a fountain pen.
In another scene, he uses a vintage Gillette Super Speed Double Edge safety razor. I believe it was a Flare Tip from the early 1960's.

In the 2006 version of The Pink Panther, Steve Martin tries but ultimately fails to give life to the character of "Inspector Clouseau" made famous by the inimitable Peter Sellers. In the scene where Clouseau is promoted to Inspector he finds he doesn't have a pen to sign the necessary papers and is offered one by Chief Inspector Dreyfus...
Dreyfus: Oh here, take my pen.
Clouseau: Thank you. One does not often see the traditional French fountain pen...

After he signs the papers Clouseau returns the pen to Dreyfus and the inevitable leaky fountain pen gag ensues:

As far as I can tell the traditional French fountain pen is a Cartier Diabolo.

From the 2016 BBC film "Their Finest", here is Gemma Arterton who plays a scriptwriter for the Ministry of Information during WWII. In the scene she uses a lever fill jade colored FP with black finial and two gold colored cap rings.

I have to admit that I love period dramas. I especially like the accuracy of those produced by OCD set designers and producers who go the extra mile to make sure costuming, and the minutiae on the set is accurate. Case in point: The makeshift candle holder -- a 'jam jar' -- on her desk Is something one would have had just in case during the war.

Teri Morris @peytonstreepens on Instagram provided three pens for the movie: one for use, one in case of emergencies, one for the actor to keep if he liked.
