Particularly pig pens, I'd imagine, though I wouldn't know first hand, not being the agricultural sort. As for cleaning out fountain pens with BSB, however, I think a fire hose might work even better than a garden hose.

...and yet, it doesn't feel half-bad being corrupted. I recognize the pattern, of course: "Try it, you'll like it. Here, the first one is free." And now I am like a million other junkies, already wondering what I'm going to do when this little taste of BSB is gone, and what depraved depths I might have to sink to to get my next fix. Will I have to turn to mugging little old ladies and knocking over liquor stores? How sordid! But I blame the supplier. Damn you Noodlers, and your little dog too.

Yay! What a relief you got it....I was afraid the toxic waste barge that hauled your booby prize had somehow been sunk by pirates, or the BSB had eaten through its deck.

Esterbrook Dipless sets. The one I have is the Hockey Puck. I don't recall the nib size, but the nib units thread in and out similar to other Esties.

    Got mine on fleabay.

I have to force myself not to buy more.

I suspected it was your parcel when they blocked off my street and diverted traffic from it for four hours, and sent a FEMA team in hazmat zoom suits (not to be confused with zoom nibs) to my front door with a small package that was visibly glowing bright blue.

Looks like in addition to my newly-acquired substance abuse problem with BSB, I am now at risk of developing a severe Esterbrook addiction. And to think that I thought that this forum would be a safe place to hang out. I guess it's true what they say about no place being safe any more.

And this is what my utility sink in my garage looked like this morning after I rinsed out my dip pen nibs last night.

When my wife saw this picture she thought that I was associating with disgusting people who do questionable things in their sinks. I was obliged to make up a story and pretend it was an image from a derelict house, not an actual in use sink. Just in case it worries other members of your family, as it disturbs mine, you need to know that BSB is soluble in ethanol, iso-propyl and other common alcohols. Hand sanitizer containing one of these also has a gelling agent which sticks it to the surface long enough to dissolve the ink and you can flush it away.

I love my Esterbrooks. You can have one or two pens and a dozen of the threaded nib units, which are also somewhat interchangeable with Osmiroid 65 pens (and vice versa).

It all began with inheriting my mother's old Esterbrook and having it restored. And then I discovered the larger J series and the hockey puck. From there it's a little hazy.

There. I have successfully threadjacked my own PIF.

That 9556 nib you wrote your note to me with laid down one of the finest lines I've seen a pen make. When I looked it up, it turns out to be called a firm fine. The 9555 is called a firm extra fine. It boggles my mind. So I've got to ask, how smooth are these nibs, anyway?

This Esterbrook nib chart may be of interest to some:
    http://www.snyderfamily.com/current/estienibs.htm

The *555 was marketed as a Gregg shorthand nib while the *556 as a fine writing nib. To me they seem quite similar in line weight from my limited experience. They lay down a fine (as in nice) fine (as in narrow) line alright

If you want an insanely fine (as in narrow) line, try a 1550 posting nib...

Smooth enough to write rapidly with for note taking too. Most of the Estie nibs I've tried that are in good shape are quite pleasant to write with.

Smoothness varies. Most of the time they are very pleasant writers. Sometimes you run across a snaggletooth that benefits from a little stropping.

I think Mom's Estie has the 1550. It vies with a manga pen and a Sailor Sapporo EF for the finest nib I own that can still write.

The manga pen was $5. The Estie, whatever it cost to be resacced back then ($25?). The Sailor....yeah. Three figures.

I have a number of Esties and a couple Osmiroids. I have experimented with replacing nibs in the nib units and interchanging Osmiroid nibs with Esterbrooks. It is my experience that (in my hand - YVMV) Osmiroid nibs work better in Esterbrooks than they do in their own pen bodies.
