I purchased a fountain pen book, Collectible Fountain Pens by Juan Manuel Clark, and it lead directly to my first fountain pen purchase. I do get your point, though, which is well taken.

@penwash seemed concerned that the expert collectors of today would go offline, retire, etc. and their knowledge would be lost. I was merely pointing out that there are a large number of reference works on the subject. We don't need to worry about that knowledge going away. Not all of those books are still in print, but virtually all of them can be readily found for sale online in ether new or used condition. There were even some at the SF Pen Show. Now there is an opportunity for an enterprising bookstore - an entire table full of different fountain pen books.
@pendragon, this is why I thank you for the post above. That is a good list of available books. In the Dallas Pen Show club meetings, we have a gentleman who is the custodian of the pen club's books, and it's literally a table full of fountain pen books.

I agree with you, the knowlege recorded in those books aren't going away soon. And I'm not losing sleep over it, I just feel that we could do better as a community to foster knowledge transfer from one generation to the next. And being smack dab in the middle of both generations, I see both perspectives.

Perhaps that could be done through the Writing Equipment Society (WES) and the Pen Collectors of America (PCA) and affiliated local pen clubs? Maybe a series of online courses combined with hands-on workshops at some of the pen show, local junior colleges or adult education centers would help?

Thanks again to Jon for his recap and for posting Miro's video here. The only thing better is actually being at the show, which is apparently going to be even bigger and better still next year.

Real life beckons, so I will check back in another 5 years and see what has happened in the fountain pen world. The sea changes that have occurred since 2014 are amazing and wonderful to see. It is so good to see what was once a micro hobby gain wider recognition. The vastly increased variety and quality pens, notebooks and accessories is a fantastic development. That people of all ages and backgrounds now participate is particularly gratifying.

lovely recap Jon. felt like I was there. I had such a ball in SF last year.
I feel like I'm sure to make it back, although we need a better means of travel than airplanes.

Hah - no waiting in the gate, but you'd better be in a riding mood if you want to get there.

    Awesome!
The NC one is closest to me...I'm hoping that it gets scheduled.
I'd rather drive to NC than go to DC...I hate going to there.
Of course, if I wind up in a conference for work during the same time period...the Miami Pen Show is also happening this year.

Pen shows are a great way to connect to the real world. Beyond pen shows we have The Pen Event, sometimes referred to the Fun Pen Show. I am told that planning for the 2021 San Francisco Pen Show is underway and on-schedule for the last weekend in August.

I believe Farmboy is doing some self-referencing to the SF Show. He's... involved in the production. He tends to focus very directly on the pens, not so much the other stuff. Well, except for the live music, that too.
