The last one i saw was Shoplifters, a Koreda movie. Before that, Lola, one of Fassbinder’s last films, & before that Berlin Alexanderplatz — the whole damn thing, over about a month. My wife is studying Spanish, so we watched “Memoirs of Underdevelopment” & Almodovar’s “High Heels” this summer. Somewhere in there i saw “I Will Buy You”, a cynical sports movie & “Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia”. Last year i was on an Altman kick, but i still haven’t seen Popeye.

A coworker who plays guitar is taking up the violin again after many years. I mentioned the movie The Red Violin to him, then a couple of days later discovered that I have the DVD, so I lent it to him. I'll have to watch it again after he returns it; I remember liking it.

The last movie I recall watching on Netflix, before I decided to cancel my Netflix and Amazon Prime memberships was The Invention of Lying, which I remembered liking when I saw it in the theater some years ago, but wasn't quite as funny the second time around.

Yes, there was a time when one could go to an actual theater to watch a movie on a large screen. I think the last film I saw in that way was Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I had some misgivings, as Quentin Tarantino's films are rather a mixed lot, but I liked this one.

I haven't been watching much of anything on the small screen at home, but last weekend I was over at the house of some friends, and we watched Ride a Crooked Trail, a western with the interesting casting of Audie Murphy and Walter Matthau.

The last movie I watched was The Quiet Man on St. Patrick's Day while enjoying a traditional Irish dinner and a nice Irish ale. I tend to prefer 'Golden Age of Hollywood' movies or a good drama rather than the Sci-Fi and special effects movies that are currently popular. I'm more interested in a good story, a good plot in particular, and decent acting.

The Last King presents the story of Romulus and Remus. Special treat for me: the only language spoken was an archaic form of Latin.

I like quirky movies -- fun or sad (Run, Lola, Run or Dziewczyna z szafy (Girl From the Wardrobe), as respective examples). I like silly action movies, like Mission: Impossible and the Bourne series (I read many Robert Ludlum novels as a teenager). Diva remains a favorite all these decades later. Stigmata and Practical Magic are so-called guilty pleasures (I don't feel guilty for liking them and re-watching them). Film noir. And so on.

I don't care for rom-coms and mainstream dramas. I do like comedies. The Anchorman is a strong favorite, as is Bowfinger (Eddie Murphy's dual roles in the latter
make this movie one of my favorites).

I stopped enjoying the cinema experience with the advent of cell phones and the inability of too many people to leave their phones off during the 1.5-2-hour duration of most movies. First it was the conversations that couldn't wait, then it was the light of quietly texting others.... Sheesh.

Sci fi first and foremost. (Saw original Star Wars in the theater as a kid in '77). Action, adventure, thriller, western, mystery. Honestly I'll watch just about anything *good* or *fun*, usually avoid slashfest, rarely watch super depressing drama stuff. I'm more of a simple dope than a super sophisticate. Bonus for movies that blend genres. Anime and animated. Goofy, quirky, heroic, Tim Burton-y, rapport-y, and comeback-y all tend to land well with me.

Off the top of my head, in no special order, some movies that come to mind as standouts for me (judge me as you will): Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Black Panther, Schindler's List, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Mummy, Cabin in the Woods, Hunt for Red October, Star Trek: Undiscovered Country, The Gods Must Be Crazy, Unforgiven, Tangled, Marvel Avengers, Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, Spanish Prisoner, Inception, Enemy Mine, Spiderman (all the Tom Holland ones), Matrix (the first only, thanks), My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Zootopia, Elf, and so forth.

I'm remembering a bunch of other movies that I've enjoyed:
Just about all Hitchcock. The Triplets of Belleville (animated). Monsters, Inc. (The endless doors hanging from wires scene!) Being John Malkovich ("Oh Craig! Not again!") (Plus John Malkovich's performance.) The Dirty Harry movies (cos San Francisco) (and Harry Callahan). Night of the Living Dead still thrills me - so scary!

Hmm... I haven't watched a few favorites in years: Local Hero, Betty Blue, Montenegro.... Maybe I'll pull myself away from Netflix and pop one of these DVDs in. (But after I watch Bullit -- hehe!)

I really love Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors (and Husbands and Wives), but... that whole terrible human being whose art we love conflict. For that matter, I really enjoy Polanski's Rosemary's Baby and The Tenant.

Then again, as Bill Hicks said about everyone who's against drugs: "Go home and burn all your rock albums."

    So.

I watched Bullit (1968, starring San Francisco and Steve McQueen) last night.

Wow. The city! And I recognized Bay Shore freeway and Brisbane -- wow, all of that is built up now; almost didn't recognize those places but they couldn't have been any other. Nice hit of geographical nostalgia.

Wathced Birdbox on the weekend. Wasn't overly impressed; the story had too many holes and the characters were all a bit flat IMHO.

I lived in Japan, in Kamakura when i was young and would go down to Shichirigahama beach to play. Japanese movie studios have used the beach for location shots since the 1930s, so i get hit with that nostalgia in what seems like every other Japanese film.
