    Default Esterbrook Deluxe

Just restored one, the Deluxe SM model in olive green barrel with slip cap which is an earlier model according to Brian Anderson's awesome Esterbrook.net.

I really love the grey section

Anybody has these? Feel free to share photos.

Wow, cool Esterbrook. I'm guessing these are lots less common than the plain ones.

These are quite a bit less common than the Esterbrook J models.
I love it because it's a solid pen, easy to restore, and it takes the same nib units as the J model.

I like these pens too. I liked one of these enough to resac it with a Parker 51 pliglas sac. Keep it working longer.

I won an auction for a Deluxe SM last night and am looking forward to restoring. Anyone know if the same sac and j bar used in the other J models are the same in the Deluxe of the same era?

I'd be surprised if you had to mess with the j-bar at all. You should only have to clean up the old ink sac and put a new one in.
Ink sac #16 up to #18 will fit depending on how tight your tolerance of "snug" is.

Okay, good to know. I have an extra j bar from when I bought two from Anderson Pens for a recent restoration. I have one #16 sac left.

Deb, I've never seen one in person before this one either. And I like it, now I'm subconsciously looking for the other colors

It surprises me that there are people familiar with Esterbrook who have not seen these before. It seems that I had several when I was lending out pens for a loaner program on FPN a few years ago.

The Deluxe arrived. The blue ink had crystalized the insides. I pulled the jBar out with needle nosed pliers which removed the last of the offending sac. The cap is full of ink. The 9556 nib looks okay. The pen is disassembled for now drying. Otherwise, the exterior is outstanding. Deep brand etching as well. Both jewels are intact and attached.

I am opting for Waterman ink for all the Esterbrooks as soon as the Pelikan is gone. I've read it requires less pen maintenance. Anyone care to comment? I'm still learning. This is my 5th Esterbrook pen restoration.

I found Waterman ink to be good as Sheaffer, Parker, Montblanc or Pelikan and many others. I have also found that there is less difference in practice as is generally claimed. I would go so far as to say that, unless an ink does something nasty repeatedly, like nib creep right off the end of the nib and makes a mess, there is little to choose from beyond color between inks. Whatever you like will, in all likelihood, be satisfactory for you. Been at this with pens and ink for sixty-two years

Got the pen's interior cleaned and installed the j bar. I decided to go ahead an attach the sac so I could re-assemble the next day and see how it performs. Three of my pens now have the 9556 nib.

I'm out of sacs and j bars so unless I find something interesting, no more restorations for now. I would not mind to collect a few more nibs. I'd like to find a 9555 Greg Nib someday.

Pen is complete and the nib is actually a 9668 medium. Writes smoothly and wider than my other Esterbrooks. I feel fortunate to have found this first generation friction fit Deluxe.

Congratulations. Nothing more apt than a photo of the restored pen and a writing sample to complete your chronicle posts

To post here you have to upload your photo somewhere so you can get a static URL which you enter into the field when you click on the Image icon on the top of this editor.

    Where to upload photos?

    Imgur.com is free.
Flickr is also free. I use flickr, the pro version since many years ago.

Either one would work. I don't know if Google drive would give you a static url or not.
