Those black wood pens are really cool looking, thanks for posting about them! I had no idea such a thing existed.

I just got the Jackie Robinson volume. I haven’t sharpened any of them. I have no intentions of it.

This is the pencil I WISH I had:

This is what I can actually afford:

Nevertheless I recently splurged and picked these up at Michaels (a US arts and crafts supplies store). Serviceable, although the graphite was not picked under the full moon by virgins consecrated to the Great Pencil Goddess. The eraser works quite well; not sure if I prefer it to a Pink Pearl; they're both excellent erasers and seem to work equally well. I got it at Jetpens.com.

Somehow I lost my first Kuru Toga. Grr. Anyway I decided to get a replacement and a couple other mechanicals to try from Pentel.

I probably could have done without the other two. I like the Kuru Toga quite a lot. Although the Graph Gear 500 is pretty nice too. The Graphlet is ok but I guess I like the heft of the others.

Just got the Mitsubishi and KUM sharper yesterday. This pencil is widely praised for smooth and dark writing.

Such an interesting conglomerate. I didn't know they made Pencils. I knew about Cars, Electronics, Airplanes. For awhile, Mitsubishi made home stereo equipment—I have a Mitsubishi receiver from the late 70s that is quite nice.

This is an interesting thread for me. I never realized that there is such a variety of pencils out in the world. I have used mechanical pencils for years, never thought they would be something people collected, I just used them😃 This is my collection gathered from all over the house, wherever there is a chair, there is a pencil and a pad of paper. The only really vintage pencil is the Sheaffer that is matched to a Sentinel fountain pen. It was my dad's set from 1948.

Testing a new sharpening method on one of my favourite pencils...gives me some distraction during my digital daily business.

    perfect for carpenter pencils too.

Here are pencils that I use for sketching/drawing. The Cretacolor, Wolf's Carbon (wood-looking), and Faber Castell Polychromos (black, above the Wolf's Carbons) are for dark blacks.

    I use pens for writing.

I remember early on in school, we used pens for everything except arithmetic / mathematics. That subject was to be written in pencil. I rejected that idea pretty quickly.

I received this red Parker 21 mark II pencil a month or two ago, as part of a matched set with a P21 pen.

This is a great pencil. It’s about 5” long. There’s an eraser if you remove the silver cap, but of course it does not work after 50+ years. I loaded it up with this excellent Pentel 2B.

That's kind of the sharpening shape that my Dad (an artist) taught me to carve using a hand-held blade. I still hand sharpen all my wood pencils that way.

by the way, I love the lighting on your photos. I have zero skills with a camera, but lately someone told me about aperture priority and it has made a big difference (i.e. from terrible to just about okay!).
