    Default Pen storage chest

Hi, Im not sure if this is the correct sub-section for this post, but how do you store your pen collection?

Ive made the attached chest for my pens recently and find it works quite well. Each pen has a dedicated space and i even have some spaces left for a few more.

I would love to see photos of your storage solution.

    Cheers

Well, that is about as handsome a cabinet as I've ever seen made for this purpose. In addition to all the detailed woodwork on the handles and exterior, kudos for doing such a fine job on the interior trays for the pens. If you feel like chatting about that particular aspect of construction, I know that people would find it of value. I certainly would!

Thanks for sharing such a lovely project.

I love cabinetry crafted like that.

I bought this chest mail order, replaced the drawer pulls and inserted Gary Lear'sLehrer's flocked trays (which just fit by sheer coincidence). It resides in a closet.

Thank you for the kind words Jon. Woodworking is one of my other passions and I particularly enjoyed making this drawer unit. I cannot take credit for the interior trays though. They are stock trays I ordered from https://gopens.com/slotted-display-trays/ They are easy to cut down to the desired size and looks and works perfectly. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Thank you Fred. That's a massive collection you seem to hide in there. In my view is drawer units the most suitable to store pens. Do you have a link to Gary Lear's trays you can share?

    Lovely work.
Some years ago I made a display case for my mate Tony, for his collection of beautiful old watches.
But I wanted them to be seen not hidden, so I used glass drawer tops. I think I'll do something similar for my very small collection of pens.
Being a Luthier, making it will be a pleasure, because I have plenty of delicious timbers to use.

Thank you. That sounds like an excellent plan. With you being a Luthier I expect see some nice inlay pieces at least

I'm not Fred, but you can find his slotted trays right here. BTW, Fred had a typo: it's Gary Lehrer.

Cool, same as what I used then.

    That’s very nice! Well done!
Oh and to your question... I don’t that many pens(yet) so I currently just use a Brazilian walnut pen block I made. I’ve been wanting to make a nice case... maybe someday!

When you store pens in cases like these, do you throw out the original packaging? I'm debating whether to do that for my modest collection, primarily for the sake of minimalism. I'm not really expecting the potential loss of value from not having the boxes to be an issue.

It thought the same when I first started collecting pens, and I disposed of boxes and booklets and the like. Alas, I was mistaken. First, I was wrong that I would keep all pens I acquired. Second, it turned out that many pen collectors place a premium on having the original boxes and accompanying literature with pens. I learned to reduce clutter by putting all that in bankers boxes in the garage.

Same here, all my boxes are stored seperately in a big old box.

I figure any collection worth collecting should be easily accessible to enjoy. If its stored in the original boxes one tends to never look at the pens as its too much of a mission to take them all out.
